Finally Time To Build A Greenhouse!

It was here. It was HERE! Lauri-Ell smiled as she looked at the large cart with layered padded out panes of carefully and custom made glass. And with it, a whole selection of the metal bars and poles and things she had made with Gili's help that were finally ready.

Lauri-Ell looked at her deliveries and looked so INSANELY gleeful, grinning massively at all she saw. She was excited, definitely excited. But...

"Now I have to get it all upstairs," she sighed. And assembled. Which she could do. But man, there was so much she had to do. "I should have arranged a day where I knew I had help."

Or someone with telekinesis, but that didn't seem likely.

2. And So The Building Begins | Blue Building Roof
Finally. It had taken her all of the day before to carefully move all of the supplies up to the roof, even with help, and the fatigue after had been too much to start the building process. So she had taken the day off, put out feelers to friends and neighbors to see if anyone wanted to help, and got up early to start in the markets. A basket of fresh turnovers and sausage rolls later, and after the making of two large pitchers of 'lemon-aid' Lauri-Ell made her way to the roof with the copies of all of the notes and designs she had made for the work.

It was time. Lauri-Ell clapped her hands together and smiled.

"Alright. Frame first I think!"

3. Things To Go In Glass Houses | Flower and Gardening Shops
Alright, now she had a lovely little greenhouse prepared, one that she could even get into. So now there was the rest that needed to be done. Which was why she had taken her cart around to a number of stores. Already she had acquired a few large bags of soil and some pots and trays for planting. But now?

Now Lauri-Ell was looking at small seedlings, not to mention bags of things proclaiming to be seeds. She looked... worried.

"But how do such very small things become such big and good plants?"

And what should she get? Food and healing things, that was what she and Yuki had agreed to.

"I don't know what to do," she mumbled unhappily.

“Mm…” Llewellyn looked around at that idea. Really, what was an organized and easy to find for Llewellyn was more of a mess for other people. The way he would keep track of things was perhaps not how other people would. It was part of why Murdoch tended to find him a bit difficult to understand and work with at times.

So he might not be the best person to ask for tips on things like that. Still, he did try his best and thought about what he’d noticed in other places before, “I suppose you could, uh- buy something to stick in the planter that you could fix little signage to if you need to label what’s been planted where.”

"Oh?" she asked, thinking about that. Was that a proper thing to do?

"Do you think they have sticks here?"

“Mm… I think so? There should be something around here, maybe on one of the displays over here?” Llewellyn commented with one of his vague waves, moving over to have a look around and see if they could find something suitable for Lauri-Ell to label what she wanted to keep track of.

"Ah, yes," Lauri agreed, moving toward the vaguely waved direction. "I hope my writing is clear. I am not good with human writing."

Llewellyn picked at a few small odds and ends, looking for something appropriate. He knew what he had in mind, but he wasn’t entirely sure where he’d seen them before. The comment about her writing gets a small, concerned glance. “Mm… If you need assistance, I’d offer to help. Though it’s been commented on that my handwriting changes depending on the moment.” A little messy, neat, illegible chicken scratch… It probably depended on how much time he had and which hand he was using.

He perked up once he found a small set of wooden plant pokes that one could probably write short things upon. “How about these?”

Oh, those looked good. Lauri-Ell nodded.

"Yes, I shall get these. Perhaps Yuki can write the names."

Really, she needed to sit down and try writing earth languages. Kree was so very different and no one else here even spoke it.

Well, since his offer had apparently been unneeded or unwanted... He shrugged and picked a few up to carry for her. "Anything else, Lauri-ell?"

It was more that she did not wish to take more of his time, especially when Yuki would help her with the plants anyway.

"Well, I was hoping that at some point you might be willing to teach me human writing? I do not wish to bother Yuki with such things. He teaches me so much already. I do not wish to burden him."

Teaching her human writing? Llewellyn slowed and tilted his head up at Lauri-Ell with a small smile. “Oh- of course, I’d be happy to help with that?” Yes, that was something he supposed he could try to help with.

Given he’d been driven to become fluent in quite a few languages over the years, he expected he could at least understand the complication of learning to write in one that wasn’t your own. He wasn’t sure if it would make him a good teacher, but it would make him a patient one. “Just let me know when you’re available to, and I can work on some lessons for you to learn and practice?”

Hey, he knew human letters, so that was something he should be able to do. She would look forward to lessons.

"After the greenhouse is done I should have some time in evenings I believe," she noted. It would be nice. We grow to the part of the year where evenings are longer, yes? Gili only stays open when the sun is up, for safety. We work less in the dark months."

Llewellyn frowned lightly at the reminder the days were growing shorter… He disliked the longer nights, so dark and dreary, and so often something happened. But he was trying to be more optimistic this winter for a lot of reasons, a lot of good reasons. So he nodded, offering Lauri-Ell a smile instead as he looked up again. “Then a few evenings a week, once Gili closes earlier, we can arrange for it. I’ll just need to check with my husband’s schedule.” He’d rather make it for nights Rhy isn’t free, after all.

Humming a little, he continued a moment later. “You don’t mind dogs, do you?”

"I would enjoy that," Lauri said, her voice soft and smiling as she reached out to touch his arm. He should know how much the agreement gave her hope.

"I do not know what a dog is."

The gesture gets a warm smile from him, glad that she seemed to find it agreeable. After all, Llewellyn liked best when he could help a friend who needed it, and this was something he could do quite well.

Of course, the fact that she didn’t know what a dog was struck him soon after and he blinked. How did one explain a dog? There were so many kinds, all looking rather different. “Uh- Well, they’re four-legged, furry animals kept as companions.”

Llewellyn, that could describe a cat? Or any number of animals?

“Mm… Here-” He shuffled through all his pocket’s rather quickly in search of his phone. Showing a picture that included Pretzel. “This is a dog, but… they don’t all look the same. You’ve probably seen a few different kinds around the city. They’re excellent company, and this one happens to be mine and Rhy’s. Name is Pretzel, and usually if he isn’t with Rhy then he’s with me…” And Llewellyn wanted to make sure the pup wouldn’t upset his friend.

"Oh, like a fur beast! My sister has a fur beast."

But then he showed her a picture and she was frowning. No, that was very different from the Flerkin that looked like a cat.

"A pretzel is food. Or so I thought."

"Well, yes, a pretzel is food too..." He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "But I named him Pretzel when I got him. I like pretzels, and his colours reminded me of an under cooked pretzel, I guess?" Llewellyn shrugged, he’d been questioned a few times about the pup’s name. He never told anyone he was good at naming things.

“I’ve never been in the position to name something before, if I’m being honest.” He shrugged lightly, “But his name is Pretzel, and the kind of dog he is would be called a basset hound.” He rubbed his cheek lightly. “He’s still young, but I assure you he’s quite friendly. Just… energetic.”

"Not because you wish to eat him?" she asked. And she definitely sounded concerned. What if it made other people want to eat the dog?

"I have named nothing either. But he looks pretty."

Llewellyn shook his head quickly at that. The concern in her tone sounded so very serious. “No, not at all. We love him very much, so he’s a part of the family. Definitely not dinner.” He explained gently, not about to brush off her concern. After all, it wasn’t as though she had much experience to compare to.

“Naming things is harder than it sounds, at least I thought so at the time.” He added with a smile. Pretzel being called pretty was rather sweet. He’d heard cute and awkward more often. “Thank you. He’s a good pup. Very clever too. So, if you don’t mind, you’ll probably be meeting him when it comes time for lessons. We don’t like to leave him alone much. Gets into things if he gets bored.”

The sheer wealth of knowledge that Lauri lacked was truly breathtaking. So sheltered and sad and easily confused. But her relief over the dog being safe was the most wonderful thing in her books.

"I have never had to name anything. I do not imagine I shall have cause to. But I would happily try and meet him!"

Well, at least Llewellyn would always be happy to explain or teach her something if the opportunity presented itself. Being new to so much would be fairly overwhelming. And hey, Pretzel needed to get used to the wide variety of people that would appear in this world. Lauri-Ell included. “Then I’ll look forward to it and organizing your lessons.” He responded with a grin, knowing he’d get some treats ready for her to give the pup. It never hurt to offer treats, after all.

Hopefully the dog wouldn't be shocked by a woman so large, or the blue of her skin, or how different she would smell to him.

As for Lauri-Ell, she knew hte proper response to this. Which was leaning forward to hug the man. Perhaps just a hair too tight. Sorry about the breathing.

Luckily, Pretzel wasn’t exactly a normal pup gained through normal means. Who knew how the sphere given him an animal or where it got him from, like several others, but he’d always been extremely good-natured towards those who didn’t seem to mean him or his people ill.

The hug was honestly something of a surprise, but Llewellyn had... come a really long way over the last year and a half, thanks to the people who’d been patient with and taught him. Hugs were nice, great even. So instead of being a little lost himself, he smiled and awkwardly raised an arm to return it as best he could, considering he was slightly trapped and it was a bit snug for him.

Hugs were the best, yes?

"Humans make good gestures," she said before releasing him. "Hugs are for friendship and happiness and gratitude, yes? Or am I making a mess of your culture again?"

Llewellyn straightened as he was let go, taking a moment to breathe while she asked her question. “No, you aren’t. That’s quite right, hugs are very good gestures for those things between friends. They’re meant to be good, and a comfort when someone needs it.”

"Ah, good," Lauri said with a smile. He was very happy to see the man thought it was the right gesture. "Humans have so much body language I do not understand."

Llewellyn nodded, a sympathetic smile on his face. “I suppose we do, and often it can be a bit difficult to read. Even I’ve had trouble with it on occasion over the years.” And why he tended to pay very strict attention to it over the years, learning to get a feel for a person and watching for those subtle shifts. “You’ll get the hang of it, and uh- if you’re ever not sure what to think around me? You’re welcome to ask.”
