Movie Night
Who; Illyana + OTA!
What; Come watch movies and eat unhealthy snacks! And maybe be affected by the little monsters that make it where you can't lie. It'll be a fun time.
Where; Moving Pictures Movie Theater
When; 10/15, slightly backdated
Warnings; None, will update if any are needed
It'd been a long time since Illyana had a movie night with anyone at all. Even longer since she'd had one with a group of people. In a different life she'd spent a lot quite a few nights with friends watching movies and throwing popcorn at one another. But that'd been then and this was now. And now she was weirdly excited about it. Not that she'd readily admit to it, but the lengths she went to in terms of preparation said enough. Children should get to have a childhood and childhoods were meant to be filled with movies and horrible snacks.
Which was exactly what this was.
Inside the theater she'd set up little stands manned by imps dressed in movie usher costumes. At their booths they're selling a variety of foods. There's a stand with popcorn mixed with various candies including M&M's, snowcaps, and probably some less tasty ones considering she let the imps pick out a few custom mixes. There's even a popcorn bag filled with nacho cheese to try out! There's a stand that has some nachos that also have various additions mixed. Basically the mixtures are whatever you could imagine, even if it's not something pleasant. The imps are doing their best though! There's also a few stands with sodas and with just candy to be picked up.
The first movie to be shown will be Gremlin a slightly altered (though barely) version of Gremlins. After that skies the limit! All the movies Illyana's picked out are horror movies of various kinds. There's a few that are about ghost sharks and one about Killer Klowns from Outer space. There's also one about a killer Leprechaun that's only real difference is it's a discount version of the original. Dollar store Leprechaun. There's a few in the j-horror haunting like the Grudge and a few featuring massive serial killers wearing weird masks.
Come have fun, feel free to make up your own movie to be shown! Or your own snacks! You're also obviously free to incorporate the event into this and have characters affected by the not being able to lie portion! Have fun!

There were a few things that Mono had been looking forward to before and after returning his impromptu trip back to his own world. The mysterious, curious, exciting, snack-filled movie night that Illyana had promised to have!
Admittedly, the snacks were still the most exciting part of all this to the boy, since movies were still something he didn’t have a lot of experience with… And he was hoping he’d understand the concept of ‘It’s fun to watch scary movies’ thing better once he’d actually experienced it. He trusted Illyana after all, and she had ensured him it would be a fun night and she that she would find some really good movies to watch! So, naturally, he believed the woman.
The first thing the boy did, of course, was go looking for her so she could show him how all of this worked. Sure, it seemed straightforward… But he wanted to see what she had to say or recommend first! “Hey Illyana!” He chirped, sounding at least a little more like himself despite the still obvious differences in him. It seemed that perhaps the promise of junk-food snacks and a fun night had put him in better spirits. “You found so many snacks!”
Though he did get a little distracted by the imps in their very fancy-looking uniforms. His static-filled eyes widening slightly as he spotted a couple. “Wow! You guys got all dressed up. That’s really neat. I kinda want a hat like that.” He said as he took a small detour from his original path to stop and see them too… Because he still saw them as his friends too, no matter how much others might try to discourage such things given they were imps and all.
A little gremlin at the snacks table. - OTA
Mono had decided that the first movie was… actually kinda fun? Gremlin, or whatever it was called, had been a bit weird in some parts, but overall entertaining! Which meant his confidence on the whole subject of scary movies was boosted somewhat from the first good experience, and now he was at the snack table ready to refuel! Not that the sweets he’d already had consumed had much of a chance to wear off yet. He had a rare bounce to his little steps, and he was far chattier than he had been in the last few weeks since his return. It was honestly nice to see, even if a large part of it probably had something to do with the copious amounts of candy he’d eaten.
Snack-salad, as he had dubbed it with Illyana, was undoubtedly his favourite way to enjoy movie night. Gathering up a bowl of popcorn and them mixing in an assortment of gummy candies, little candy coated chocolates (M&Ms) and other interesting things that grabbed his attention. “These are really good!” He commented, either to no one or whoever was standing near by as he added a few more sand-shark-shaped gummies to his collection.

"They did most of it. I told them what to get and for once they actually did it." She looked at them as they flocked around Mono appreciating that he seemed to appreciate their spiffy costumes. They hadn't been sure about them at first but here they were having someone envious of their hats. One of them even straightened his as if to show off that it was in fact his hat.
"Cold day in Limbo I guess." She figured the saying would be lost on Mono but it wouldn't be on them. They seemed to happy to notice that she'd thrown a tiny insult their way. Alas.
"Really?" she waved a hand a portal appeared next to Mono with a hat. A hat being held by a tentacle that was very politely offering it up to him. As polite as a tentacle could be.
no subject
The small insult indeed goes over his head. “It gets cold there?” The question is voiced unsurprisingly at the idea. He hadn’t imagined a place like that could get cold, right?
But it wasn’t hard to distract him either, as a portal opened next to him and he jumped a little in surprise. It should be weird, and a little unsettling that a tentacle was offering him a hat… But Mono was already used to pretty weird stuff, and this was one of Illyana’s portals and presumably one of her creatures. So at the sight of the hat he gasped, “Wow, really? Thanks you!” He commented either to Illyana, the tentacle, or both as he reached out to take the hat to look it over. He soon tugged off his newsboy hat to shove in a pocket and pop the new hat on his head. “What do ya think?” He asked, turning to both the imps and her once it was settled properly on his head.
no subject
"No. It'd be nice if it did. It's always way too hot there. I miss the cold." It'd never been too hot back in her first home, her real home. Limbo though? Everything about it was too hot and too dusty save for the tiny garden she'd been trying to keep going.
"You're welcome. I think it looks good!" And she meant that. Only partially because it was a gift from her. "Do you like it?"
no subject
The kid blinked in surprise, so she said it because it was so unlikely… Now he got it! Mostly… Probably… He was pretty sure he did. That said, he nodded as she admitted that she missed the cold. She had told him it was really cold where she was from, after all. “At least it’s almost winter time again? At least, I think it almost is.” And it was getting cooler here, a little more each day as the leaves had been changing colour for the fall and dropping from the trees as a sign of winter’s approach.
“Thanks!” Mono grinned at the compliment, adjusting the hat a little more with a small bit of glee in his tone. “I do! I haven’t had a new hat in a long time! I used to find them all the time in the Pale City. Not so much here, here they’re all in stores and you gotta buy them.” So there were no abandoned hats to be found, unfortunately. That made Illyana’s gift even more special, between it being a new hat from a friend and the first new hat in a long time!

"I wonder if there will be snow again." Did she sound a tiny bit wistful? Yes. Though she was very reluctant to allow herself to be too hopeful that there might be snow again. It was getting cool and that was a good sign. Strange how much she was looking forward to the prospect. It wasn't even really the snow that she liked, it was just the memories. The nostalgia. Not that she wanted to really admit to it.
"You just found them laying around?" Wait. Or did he make them out of things he found? If that was the case that was just a tiny bit sad.
no subject
“I hope so! I wanna try to make a bigger snow fort this year. I was just getting good at it and snowmen when everything started to melt last year.” He responded, tone slightly hopeful. The snow was a lot more fun now that he had warm clothes and winter boots to make it less cold to be out in. Last winter had been a lot more fun than the first, and now that he knew more about it…? Mono bet the next would be more fun still, as long as it snowed.
Though the question gets a quick nod, “Yup! Stuff gets left all over the place since people aren’t really doing stuff anymore. Sometimes I get really lucky and find stuff that’s either a hat or makes a good hat! Like I found my postman hat in the old post office, and I found a funny teddy bear mask in one place…. Though it might’ve just been a head off an old teddy bear, I guess.” And no one needed to know where he found the Sou’wester hat… That was probably better left unvoiced, all things considered.
no subject
"Maybe we can make one together. I could make warrior snowmen and you can handle the fort!" For just a second something that could almost be considered childlike entered into her demeanor. One might even think she actually sounded excited about this potential idea. Maybe she was. She definitely was. At her heart Illyana was a young woman who had most of her childhood taken from her. Sometimes she wanted to get just a bit of that back.
"You wore the head off an old teddy bear? How did you see?" That was the real question there. Though his explanation did leave a bit of a frown on her face. On one had it was impressive he'd been resilient enough to survive and forage like that. On the other it was pretty sad that he'd had to live like that.
no subject
Gasping at the idea, Mono looked kind of excited at the idea. “Yeah! I bet we could make a really good fort!! And snowmen guards are important, they can keep a watch out for danger for us! Only maybe we shouldn’t make them as alive as the one you did magic to last year. Then they might try to take over the fort.” He added thoughtfully, remembering the prank she had played on him and how the snowman’s attitude had changed pretty soon after it came to life. Unless she perfected the magic so they might not get mad! “I bet we could make a lot though if we started as soon as there’s a lot of snow!”
The boy nodded to the question vigorously, though he shrugged a little at the question. “Poked holes around the eyes so then I could see better! I don’t get that one with me, though. I only got the more hat like ones. I also had a can that was kinda like a helmet that had holes to see out of.” Honestly, Mono was pretty proud of the hats he had found and the other things he’d managed to used to work like hats or headwear while working his way through the Pale City.
no subject
"Good point! We wouldn't want to have to deal with the War of the Snowmen. I went to a reality with that once. It was pretty bad." That was completely and utterly made up. It was a good sounding story though. At least in her mind it sounded like a really good story. There was always a chance of creations going rogue when you gave them life. That was why sentience spells were always a bit dangerous.
"Did you collect them then?" Maybe she had a good idea for what to get him as a gift now. "Poking holes in it to see was smart."
no subject
“Really? You went somewhere that it happened??” The boy’s eyes were wide with some obvious curiosity and awe, because of course he was taking her story seriously… When comparing it to everything else that happened around here or in other places, it didn’t sound that unreal to him at all!
He had a very specific love for hats, both because of how practical they could be when he didn’t want people to focus on his face or to hide his eyes… While also being really neat with all the varieties that they came in! So he nodded quickly, “Yup! I have some of them here, but other ones I kinda lost sometimes ‘cause they were harder to keep in my big coat pockets and stuff. There was a tin-can I used for a little while. It was kinda like a helmet that knights used!” And protected his head better than some hats, which was nice since he was pretty clumsy. “Thanks, I thought it worked pretty good!” He sounded pretty proud of himself for it, really.
no subject
"Oh yeah! I was searching for a solution to how solve my demonic Elder Gods from beyond space and time problem and ended up in something that could have been a new movie. Maybe we should make it together. Attack of the Killer Snowmen!" Kinda like attack of the killer tomato's but with snowmen. Honestly the sad thing was she thought it might actually be a cult hit.
"A tin can knight helmet. I think they might be insulted by that." She'd only known a few knights but they were all rather proud of their armor and helmets and all that. Too proud for her liking. Proud and stuffy. "You're very resourceful to think of all that. I had to come up with things like that when I was little in Limbo too." Nothing like the hats, but unique ways to protect herself. "Not many can survive." Most don't, but she left that part out. It would be too depressing for a fun night.
no subject
“Wow!!” The boy was definitely buying into it. He would be so shocked if he ever learned it wasn’t true, people mustn’t tell him. “I bet we could make a bunch of snowmen and everything if you did!” And as long as they were careful, it shouldn’t go badly… right? It might just be a fun afternoon making a pretend movie! “Then you could play the movie here!” Because that’s what you did with movies, right? You showed them to your friends at the theater, or something like that.
“Would they? Isn’t that kinda what they wear on their heads already? Just kinda fancy shaped.” So it didn’t seem like an insult to Mono, just a statement of fact! But he tilted his head slightly. It was always… Weirdly sad but also nice to know that Illyana kind of understood this stuff. Not everyone did, and trying to explain it in a way that they could understand was difficult sometimes. He never had to go through that around her. “Yeah, it can be hard… I don’t think a lot of people learn how before they don’t got a chance to learn anymore.” He was just… Lucky…? Lucky didn’t seem like the right word to him, though, considering what he knew now. But he did have the chance to learn to survive on his own, where a lot of others in his world didn’t.

A little gremlin at the snacks table
None of this seemed like something she would usually try to do by herself. But here she was. Vaguely trying in the most uncomfortable looking way ever. It occured to her in the back of her mind that it was very silly that Shinjiro and Akihiko had never even suggested they go to a movie together. Until this place a thought like that would have never occured to her. She was somewhat lost in these thoughts as she looked over the assortment of candies, completely uncertain of what to even consider trying when she heard Mono comment.
"Are they?" He may have been young but he seemed to have gotten an expertise on the candies. Or at least more knowledge than she had. Which wasn't hard. "There's so much to choose from that I wasn't certain what to try..." Was she embarrassed to admit that to him? Just a little bit.
no subject
At least Mitsuru didn’t have to worry about Mono thinking she was weird or anything for not knowing what to try. There was a lot of food here! Illyana and her imps had gotten a lot of stuff for the movie night. “There’s a lot! Like more than I knew there could be for snacks! So I didn’t know either, which is why I kinda just started trying some of everything so I could see what I liked best.” He explained rather sagely for a 10-year-old, nodding slightly as he looked back at the table that was now slightly easier for him to see over the top of these days. This was probably why he was on the sugar rush he was on, since he’d started on one end and worked his way across a little at a time.

As he spoke she couldn't help but think of Ken and how hard he would have tried to resist the lure of the sweets. Deep down she knew he wanted to do the things normal children did and she wished he'd gotten the chance. Yet he seemed to struggle with the idea of even allowing himself to display even the briefest hint that could reveal his age. It was actually nice to see Mono acting more like the kid he was. He deserved that. Though...she also thought he'd had a bit too much at this point.
"You should be careful. Too much sugar can be bad for you."
no subject
The boy looked rather pleased in his own odd way to hear that she was going to try the food, though. It was all really good, and he was pretty sure Illyana and the imps had put a lot of work into getting everything together and set up for people to enjoy. “Exactly! It doesn’t hurt at all, ‘cause it all tastes really good. Unless you combined something like the nacho cheese popcorn with sour candies, I guess that might not be good.” But the gummy sharks were a safe place to start! And mixing candies and popcorns was something she could try later when she gained more confidence, right?
At least, that made sense to Mono.
Though her warning gets a rather amusing scrunch of his face. Nose wrinkling a little at the idea that too much could be bad. “People told me that before, and I know eventually you get really tired when all the sugar powers not in your body anymore… But it’s worth it tonight, ‘cause I’ve never been to the movies before and lots of snacks are a part of movie night I guess!”
no subject
She picked up one of the sour gummies and looked at it as if she were studying an actual shark. Nobody in the history of candy tasting had ever studied a single piece of candy as intently as Mitsuru was doing right then and there. Finally, after a few seconds of moving it around she put the entire thing into her mouth. A mix of sugar and sour hit her and her lips pursed together. Despite the intensity of it, the little shark wasn't actually that bad. In fact, she kind of wanted another one? "Hmm. It's...not awful." She liked it. "Though I would agree it wouldn't be so good with popcorn and nacho cheese." And she admitted it was good! The thought of mixing it with cheese made her want to take that compliment back though.
"You haven't? I hadn't gone to many in this way until fairly recently back home myself. And there it was only one." It'd been fun though. More fun than she'd thought. "Then I suppose there's nothing wrong with going all out this once."
no subject
As Mitsuru took the gummy shark, Mono waited with an expression of eager anticipation. Would she like it? Or maybe she would prefer some of the other candies? He should think about which other ones to recommend in case she didn’t! But then once her thorough consideration of the snack was complete, and she ate it, Mono felt rather proud of himself for suggesting it when she seemed to like the snack! Smiling his little tilted, clumsy smile, the boy nodded quickly. “Exactly! It’s good, but I think it’s gotta go with the right thing to still be good. Like maybe the candy coated popcorn or regular popcorn instead?” He stretched an arm out to take another gummy for himself now, having made himself want just one more shark now that he’d recommended them.
“Nope, never!” He confirmed, albeit with perhaps less explanation that one would hope on the matter. He might not want to talk about it, or he might just be more excited about the sugar and the movies here. It was hard to say. “But I like it so far! Both the snacks and the movies are kinda fun, huh?” He finally looked satisfied with his collection of snacks for now. “Yeah! We gotta make the most of it while we can, cause it’s a special fun night! And the imps and Illyana put a lot of work into stuff so it’s good enjoy it all, right?”
no subject
With a slight bit of hesitation she took another one herself and put it into her mouth. There was a tiny part of her felt that felt like it was a bit too indulgent to have another but...she was starting to really like them. There were so many things she should have given a chance that she never did. It really was like opening up an entirely new world. "I think it's quite fine on it's own." Perhaps mixing it with other things was a little too advanced for her currently. Small steps!
"I have seen a few here and there. Only ones in a theater like others do though. Do they not have them where you're from?" From what she'd gathered he was from quite a dystopian sounding place. Perhaps theaters were long gone there. "They are. I had never known how enjoyable the experience of going to a place like this normally could be until a friend took me." So it was nice that others were now having that chance.
no subject
Mono felt pretty accomplished that he had introduced her to a new snack candy that she clearly liked. But if snack-salad was too advanced for her to try, he pointed at shark gummies again. “Then you gotta take a few so you got a complete snack, right? ‘Cause you gotta have snacks to last through the first part of the movie at least?” He had also learned this. It was important to have enough snacks that looked like they should last the whole movie, but they would inevitably only last through the early parts and then be gone, but it at least lasted a little while!
“I dunno. I never been to one?” The boy offered a little shrug, but then considered the question more seriously as he popped another piece of candy in his mouth. “I guess there could be. The Pale City was kinda big, and I only went into buildings if I had to. But I don’t think there’d be any theaters that people still go to, people don’t really go places much at all. Everyone left kinda just watches tv all the time.” He had still been a bit nervous about the movie night before he got here and saw his first movie… It was an awful big screen, after all, and it was a little light television shows… But they were also put on differently, with rolls of film instead of broadcast through a signal. So it seemed safe enough once he saw a movie and nothing really bad happened.
no subject
"Ah, but what would I put them in to hold them during the movie?" She wasn't about to just put them all in her hand and keep them there. Besides, they'd get sticky there, right? That just seemed like a mess waiting to happen. Evidently going to the movies and holding snacks was a much more important business transaction for Mitsuru than it might be for most. The last thing she wanted to do was to go to something unfamiliar and look foolish. That was part of what had kept her from going alone all those years back home.
"That sounds quite depressing to traverse through." She wasn't entirely certain if this was the place to ask questions about that but in the end her curiosity won out. "What did they watch? Was there a particular show or broadcast being played?"
no subject
Mono wasn’t sure if adults would like to learn from a kid, just based on experience… But if this Lori needed help learning how to keep stuff clean, he sure would try to help if they ever got here! “Maybe I can help then if she ever ends up being in Aterat, too. I kinda like helping when people need me to.” It seemed like a good thing to do for people, and it made him feel a little better to know he could do good things, too.
Her question gets a little pause, and the boy looked around the table… “That’s true… Especially if you’re not gonna mix it. Oh! I know!” He said before hurrying off and asking their helpful ‘attendants’ for something. Then he came back in a little rush with a bag in his hands. It was the kind the popcorn had been put in, but empty! “You can use this! They didn’t put anything in it yet, so you can put some of your handy in it for the movie without having to hold it in your hands the whole movie, right?” He asked, holding it up to her while looking quite proud of himself.
“Yeah… It was kinda a weird, bad place. Not like here at all.” He responded with a little shrug, tilting his head up at her question as he tried to remember what was on the TVs that the viewers watched. “There was a lot of random stuff, I guess? I sometimes saw bits and pieces of them when I was sneaking around. There was one with a lady in a kitchen and a weird song. I dunno if she was cooking something, though.” He had assumed her name was Veronica, at least based on the weird song playing.
no subject
"Iori is a he," she said with a light laugh. "I think he might be mortified at being called a she. And at being helped by a child. Though, I imagine you would be quite a help." At the very least it would be rather amusing to see how it all ended up happening.
"Thank you very much, Mono," she said as she took the bag. "This was quite thoughtful and resourceful of you." While she might not have entirely intended to bring a bunch of the gummys with her she certainly couldn't turn it down now. So, she took some from the stand and plopped them down into the bag.
"Then I'm glad you're here." That seemed like such a strange statement to make and yet from what he'd said this place sounded infinitely better. "Perhaps it's for the best you could never really make it out."
no subject
“Oh!” He blinked in surprise, realizing his blunder but recovering rather quickly as children might. “Well, I still would try to help him, if he let me. I know adults here are weird sometimes about stuff ‘cause I’m just a kid.” But cleaning was a not dangerous thing, so why wouldn’t they let him help with that much? It was just sensible, right? Adults liked to be sensible, so that seemed like the right idea.
“You’re welcome, Mitsuru!” He responded with a proud tone and another clumsy attempt at a smile. It was pretty clear the boy liked to be helpful, based on their conversation and his actions. Though it was a little more than just liking to help these days, wanting to prove to himself he could be good and helpful to people around him instead of bad. “Now you can take snacks in to the next movie you watch and enjoy them!” He still thought she could use a few more and wondered if there were any candies that went well with the sharks.
Mono wasn’t sure people should be glad he was here, but he was working on that thanks to Illyana and a few other people who also seemed glad he was there… “Thanks, I like being here better too.” He responded, focusing on the candy table and snagging another piece to distract himself with. “It might be. I kinda don’t want to go back either.” He added, knowing what was going to happen if he went back now made the idea kind of scary. Scarier than any of the movies playing that night.
