Movie Night
Who; Illyana + OTA!
What; Come watch movies and eat unhealthy snacks! And maybe be affected by the little monsters that make it where you can't lie. It'll be a fun time.
Where; Moving Pictures Movie Theater
When; 10/15, slightly backdated
Warnings; None, will update if any are needed
It'd been a long time since Illyana had a movie night with anyone at all. Even longer since she'd had one with a group of people. In a different life she'd spent a lot quite a few nights with friends watching movies and throwing popcorn at one another. But that'd been then and this was now. And now she was weirdly excited about it. Not that she'd readily admit to it, but the lengths she went to in terms of preparation said enough. Children should get to have a childhood and childhoods were meant to be filled with movies and horrible snacks.
Which was exactly what this was.
Inside the theater she'd set up little stands manned by imps dressed in movie usher costumes. At their booths they're selling a variety of foods. There's a stand with popcorn mixed with various candies including M&M's, snowcaps, and probably some less tasty ones considering she let the imps pick out a few custom mixes. There's even a popcorn bag filled with nacho cheese to try out! There's a stand that has some nachos that also have various additions mixed. Basically the mixtures are whatever you could imagine, even if it's not something pleasant. The imps are doing their best though! There's also a few stands with sodas and with just candy to be picked up.
The first movie to be shown will be Gremlin a slightly altered (though barely) version of Gremlins. After that skies the limit! All the movies Illyana's picked out are horror movies of various kinds. There's a few that are about ghost sharks and one about Killer Klowns from Outer space. There's also one about a killer Leprechaun that's only real difference is it's a discount version of the original. Dollar store Leprechaun. There's a few in the j-horror haunting like the Grudge and a few featuring massive serial killers wearing weird masks.
Come have fun, feel free to make up your own movie to be shown! Or your own snacks! You're also obviously free to incorporate the event into this and have characters affected by the not being able to lie portion! Have fun!

The small insult indeed goes over his head. “It gets cold there?” The question is voiced unsurprisingly at the idea. He hadn’t imagined a place like that could get cold, right?
But it wasn’t hard to distract him either, as a portal opened next to him and he jumped a little in surprise. It should be weird, and a little unsettling that a tentacle was offering him a hat… But Mono was already used to pretty weird stuff, and this was one of Illyana’s portals and presumably one of her creatures. So at the sight of the hat he gasped, “Wow, really? Thanks you!” He commented either to Illyana, the tentacle, or both as he reached out to take the hat to look it over. He soon tugged off his newsboy hat to shove in a pocket and pop the new hat on his head. “What do ya think?” He asked, turning to both the imps and her once it was settled properly on his head.

"No. It'd be nice if it did. It's always way too hot there. I miss the cold." It'd never been too hot back in her first home, her real home. Limbo though? Everything about it was too hot and too dusty save for the tiny garden she'd been trying to keep going.
"You're welcome. I think it looks good!" And she meant that. Only partially because it was a gift from her. "Do you like it?"
no subject
The kid blinked in surprise, so she said it because it was so unlikely… Now he got it! Mostly… Probably… He was pretty sure he did. That said, he nodded as she admitted that she missed the cold. She had told him it was really cold where she was from, after all. “At least it’s almost winter time again? At least, I think it almost is.” And it was getting cooler here, a little more each day as the leaves had been changing colour for the fall and dropping from the trees as a sign of winter’s approach.
“Thanks!” Mono grinned at the compliment, adjusting the hat a little more with a small bit of glee in his tone. “I do! I haven’t had a new hat in a long time! I used to find them all the time in the Pale City. Not so much here, here they’re all in stores and you gotta buy them.” So there were no abandoned hats to be found, unfortunately. That made Illyana’s gift even more special, between it being a new hat from a friend and the first new hat in a long time!

"I wonder if there will be snow again." Did she sound a tiny bit wistful? Yes. Though she was very reluctant to allow herself to be too hopeful that there might be snow again. It was getting cool and that was a good sign. Strange how much she was looking forward to the prospect. It wasn't even really the snow that she liked, it was just the memories. The nostalgia. Not that she wanted to really admit to it.
"You just found them laying around?" Wait. Or did he make them out of things he found? If that was the case that was just a tiny bit sad.

“I hope so! I wanna try to make a bigger snow fort this year. I was just getting good at it and snowmen when everything started to melt last year.” He responded, tone slightly hopeful. The snow was a lot more fun now that he had warm clothes and winter boots to make it less cold to be out in. Last winter had been a lot more fun than the first, and now that he knew more about it…? Mono bet the next would be more fun still, as long as it snowed.
Though the question gets a quick nod, “Yup! Stuff gets left all over the place since people aren’t really doing stuff anymore. Sometimes I get really lucky and find stuff that’s either a hat or makes a good hat! Like I found my postman hat in the old post office, and I found a funny teddy bear mask in one place…. Though it might’ve just been a head off an old teddy bear, I guess.” And no one needed to know where he found the Sou’wester hat… That was probably better left unvoiced, all things considered.

"Maybe we can make one together. I could make warrior snowmen and you can handle the fort!" For just a second something that could almost be considered childlike entered into her demeanor. One might even think she actually sounded excited about this potential idea. Maybe she was. She definitely was. At her heart Illyana was a young woman who had most of her childhood taken from her. Sometimes she wanted to get just a bit of that back.
"You wore the head off an old teddy bear? How did you see?" That was the real question there. Though his explanation did leave a bit of a frown on her face. On one had it was impressive he'd been resilient enough to survive and forage like that. On the other it was pretty sad that he'd had to live like that.

Gasping at the idea, Mono looked kind of excited at the idea. “Yeah! I bet we could make a really good fort!! And snowmen guards are important, they can keep a watch out for danger for us! Only maybe we shouldn’t make them as alive as the one you did magic to last year. Then they might try to take over the fort.” He added thoughtfully, remembering the prank she had played on him and how the snowman’s attitude had changed pretty soon after it came to life. Unless she perfected the magic so they might not get mad! “I bet we could make a lot though if we started as soon as there’s a lot of snow!”
The boy nodded to the question vigorously, though he shrugged a little at the question. “Poked holes around the eyes so then I could see better! I don’t get that one with me, though. I only got the more hat like ones. I also had a can that was kinda like a helmet that had holes to see out of.” Honestly, Mono was pretty proud of the hats he had found and the other things he’d managed to used to work like hats or headwear while working his way through the Pale City.

"Good point! We wouldn't want to have to deal with the War of the Snowmen. I went to a reality with that once. It was pretty bad." That was completely and utterly made up. It was a good sounding story though. At least in her mind it sounded like a really good story. There was always a chance of creations going rogue when you gave them life. That was why sentience spells were always a bit dangerous.
"Did you collect them then?" Maybe she had a good idea for what to get him as a gift now. "Poking holes in it to see was smart."
no subject
“Really? You went somewhere that it happened??” The boy’s eyes were wide with some obvious curiosity and awe, because of course he was taking her story seriously… When comparing it to everything else that happened around here or in other places, it didn’t sound that unreal to him at all!
He had a very specific love for hats, both because of how practical they could be when he didn’t want people to focus on his face or to hide his eyes… While also being really neat with all the varieties that they came in! So he nodded quickly, “Yup! I have some of them here, but other ones I kinda lost sometimes ‘cause they were harder to keep in my big coat pockets and stuff. There was a tin-can I used for a little while. It was kinda like a helmet that knights used!” And protected his head better than some hats, which was nice since he was pretty clumsy. “Thanks, I thought it worked pretty good!” He sounded pretty proud of himself for it, really.
no subject
"Oh yeah! I was searching for a solution to how solve my demonic Elder Gods from beyond space and time problem and ended up in something that could have been a new movie. Maybe we should make it together. Attack of the Killer Snowmen!" Kinda like attack of the killer tomato's but with snowmen. Honestly the sad thing was she thought it might actually be a cult hit.
"A tin can knight helmet. I think they might be insulted by that." She'd only known a few knights but they were all rather proud of their armor and helmets and all that. Too proud for her liking. Proud and stuffy. "You're very resourceful to think of all that. I had to come up with things like that when I was little in Limbo too." Nothing like the hats, but unique ways to protect herself. "Not many can survive." Most don't, but she left that part out. It would be too depressing for a fun night.
no subject
“Wow!!” The boy was definitely buying into it. He would be so shocked if he ever learned it wasn’t true, people mustn’t tell him. “I bet we could make a bunch of snowmen and everything if you did!” And as long as they were careful, it shouldn’t go badly… right? It might just be a fun afternoon making a pretend movie! “Then you could play the movie here!” Because that’s what you did with movies, right? You showed them to your friends at the theater, or something like that.
“Would they? Isn’t that kinda what they wear on their heads already? Just kinda fancy shaped.” So it didn’t seem like an insult to Mono, just a statement of fact! But he tilted his head slightly. It was always… Weirdly sad but also nice to know that Illyana kind of understood this stuff. Not everyone did, and trying to explain it in a way that they could understand was difficult sometimes. He never had to go through that around her. “Yeah, it can be hard… I don’t think a lot of people learn how before they don’t got a chance to learn anymore.” He was just… Lucky…? Lucky didn’t seem like the right word to him, though, considering what he knew now. But he did have the chance to learn to survive on his own, where a lot of others in his world didn’t.
no subject
"Oh, I'm certain we could! Would you want to be a director or producer?" Very important question to ask. "We could play it for everyone. They'd all come I'm sure." Even if she just had to teleport as many people as she could to force them to watch it.
"Fair point! But knights are always arrogant and proud. They love their armor." Or maybe she'd just had bad luck with the ones she'd met. It was hard to tell sometimes. "Survival of the fittest." There was a frown on her face with the words, as if she wasn't entirely happy about having to admit that was the truth of how things worked. "You were better than them."
no subject
The boy wasn’t sure what either of those things were. “I dunno? What does a director and producer do?? Would I be good at one of those things?” He asked, taking her question very seriously. “Then we could have another movie night, a special one to show what we did!” Did he need to know a lot of people might just need to be forced to watch it? No, he had too much faith in the idea that they would just come to see the movie themselves.
“I dunno if I ever met a real knight before.” He has, perhaps, but hasn’t realized it given he tends to think if fairytale book illustration terms. “But that doesn’t sound like they’re very fun then. Although I guess I understand liking armor special, since it keeps you from getting hurt.” He rambled a bit, turning the idea over in his head a few times.
A small, sad expression crossed his face. “Better at surviving, I guess… But it’s still kinda sad that a lot of people aren’t.” And the small, worried thought of ‘if I didn’t become what I did, maybe things wouldn’t be so messed up and hard to survive?’ That was perhaps an unfair responsibility to put on himself, but knowing his future made that a bit hard sometimes. Especially if the eldritch horror creature was in control and couldn’t be stopped as long as it used him.

"You'd be great at it. The producer produces things. Sometimes they come up with the story or sometimes they just find one they like and toss money at it. Then they employ everyone else. The director directs the actual movie, deciding if they like how the actors acted in the scene or if they like how the scene looked." She looked at him expectantly, as if to just ask which he liked the sound of more. "We could! And I'm sure they'd love it." Because again, they'd be forced to. Or strongly suggested that they better love it or maybe she'd have the imps torture them.
"They're not fun. They're boring." But she had a weird idea about boring and not boring. She shook her head at his statement and forced a smile. "Don't think about it too much. This is a fun night." And if he started thinking about it she might also think about the people she'd lost in Limbo. She'd lived because of their deaths and that was not something she ever wanted to deal with.

Listening to the whole explanation, he tapped his chin lightly. “I don’t got a lot of money, so I guess maybe I should be the director? ‘cause I can’t throw money at stuff, but I could watch and help make stuff better, right?” That made the most sense, after all. He did get paid being a letter carrier, but he was pretty sure he didn’t make enough to pay everyone else for acting and stuff! So let the producer be someone who could afford it, or something like that. “Then let’s do that! As soon as the snow is on the ground and stuff!” He added with an excited tone, liking the idea more and more. They could work on it all winter, then show it to people when it was done!
Aterat wouldn’t know what to think, that was for sure…
“Then I guess the stories are wrong. That kinda sucks.” Because, of course, Mono believed Illyana about them being boring completely. Why wouldn’t he? She must know about real knights more than he did! And… Well, the bod nodded finally to that. “Y-yeah… I won’t.” He added as his eyes turned back to the table. Illyana was right, this was a fun night. He didn’t want to think about certain things, or his world. All of this was much better… “Let’s have fun then.” He added more to tell himself than her.
no subject
"Director it is then! Congratulations Director Mono. You'll need a director's hat now." She said with a grin. What exactly was a director's hat? She had no idea. They had to have one though, right? "We'll do it then. Hopefully there's a good snow this year and no memory crystals or anything like that." Just happy fun snow perfect for making the best movie ever. That Aterat definitely won't just side-eye consider them weird for.
"Stories are often wrong. Or overexaggerated. That's what makes them stories. Nobody's going to listen or read the if they're not embellished." Which was just a fancy word for lying. "You should hear the things they say about sorceresses and witches where I'm from." Russia was not kind to folklore like that. Actually, no place was really. There were too many bad connections with it for kindness to ever be shown.

Mono’s eyes widened. “Directors get hats?? That’s really cool! I wonder what it looks like…” He was clearly very excited about the idea of a job that came with a special hat, given his obvious love for head-wear in general. It meant the director really was the perfect job for him! “Yeah, I really don’t wanna see more stuff happen like that stupid crystal rain… That wasn’t fun at all. But the snow happened pretty soon, right? So if it’s gonna snow, we don’t got long to wait!” Which meant he was very excited about their potential movie. He would be very disappointed if it didn’t snow at all. Nature would be disappointing them if it didn’t happen.
“Yeah, I guess that’s kinda true. I know there were sometimes witches in story books, and they’re different from the kind of people that got magic here!” So it did kind of make sense that the stories were wrong. He remembered meeting a witch who was pretty nice at one point… So definitely different from the ‘wicked witches’ that might be in story books about knights and princesses. “I wonder why they gotta lie about what they’re like? Just seems kinda mean, and makes you more scared of meeting a real one, right?”
no subject
"Oh yeah. They get really important hats. And usually a chair with their name on it. All very important official things." At least that's what she'd learned from Hollywood and if it wasn't true, well that was Hollywood's fault, not hers. "It should snow. The seasons seem to be pretty consistent here." If you could say anything was actually consistent here.
"Witches in storybooks always get a bad name. Really is a shame." Not that a lot of sorcerers weren't awful. But there were good witches, one in particular she had loved deeply. "Because, people always lie about power. They're always afraid of it."
no subject
“Really? That sounds kinda important and fun. Well, except for the chair. Do I gotta sit around? I don’t think I wanna do that part if I don’t gotta.” Because, well, he’d been sitting in a single chair for long enough, and it was slightly disconcerting to think he’d take a job where he’d do just that again. Mono at least recovered well enough, bouncing back at the mention of consistent weather around here. “I can’t wait to see it snow. As soon as we get a biiig snow, we gotta start figuring stuff out!”
“Yeah, ‘cause real ones aren’t all bad and scary like they make them seem!” It just seemed kind of mean to do that, not that he knew about writing books or anything… But it didn’t seem fair. “Sometimes powers are scary, so I guess I kinda get it… But they aren’t all, so it doesn’t seem fair to treat everyone the same.”
no subject
"Even if there isn't any snow maybe I could find a spell to make some." There had to be something like that! There were spells for everything after all.
"Humans always treat everyone with powers the same." There was a hint of bitterness in her tone there that she just couldn't help.
no subject
Tilting his head slightly at the idea, he blinked. “So you could even make weather stuff happen with magic? That’s really neat! So we don’t gotta worry if it doesn’t snow, anyway.” Was there anything magic couldn’t do? Mono wasn’t sure, but it sure seemed like it could do most things. Or… At least Mono believed Illyana could do most things with magic, but he believed in her a lot in general.
Mono frowned a little though, before nodding. “I guess they do. It seems like they’re kinda mean about powers everywhere, huh? It’s really stupid.”
no subject
"Yup. You can do anything with magic if you have the knowledge and the skill." And the willingness sometimes. But that didn't seem appropriate to tell him, especially if they were talking about about people with powers being treated poorly.
"Fear causes it. People fear people with more power than they have."
no subject
It all sounded pretty amazing to Mono, at least with how she was explaining it. “Yeah? You must got a lot of both, right?” At least Illyana seemed like she did to Mono, more than the average person he’d met since he arrived here.
“I guess… Power can be scary sometimes.” Like his, he realized. “But if someone’s not doing bad stuff with it, seems kinda dumb to treat them bad just for having it.”
no subject
"I do. I've had a lot of time to read over a really big library to learn." And practice. She appreciated the compliment though, even if she thought he gave her a bit too much credit.
"They assume that we'll do bad things with it.Then don't bother to even consider we might not."
no subject
“Wow! That’s probably a lot of learning then. Some of the books in the library here are really big and confusing looking.” He rather liked ones with stories that included pictures. They were more fun to read… And not nearly as hard as some of the other stuff he opened out of curiosity.
Mono frowned at that. He kind of understood that for sure… But then again? “It’s kinda stupid to not think that some people might not do bad stuff, huh?”
