A boy and his… moth? - OTA

When it came to days where he wasn’t working or practising with his abilities, Mono found that he really enjoyed the park. Sometimes he enjoyed to sitting by the pond and watching frogs or sharing bread with the local ducks that gathered nearby. If he was lucky and wandering the paths, he might meet someone who had a pet with them and they’d be okay with him giving them some friendly pets or give them a treat. Pets were always something of a curiosity for the boy. He’d met so many in the last few years! They were all so different. Different kinds, different personalities... It was always neat to meet a new one and see what people liked to keep them company.

Occasionally he wondered what it would be like to have a fuzzy friend himself, especially with Nida and Ignis’s pets or meeting Rhy’s bunnies… But he was always a bit afraid of if he'd be a good pet-parent or not, considering the responsibility and how crushing it might be if the creature he got attached to suddenly decided it disliked him...

Fate was a funny thing, though, and the universe sometimes liked to throw a surprise or two at you. For Mono, one crossed his path on one of the days he spent wandering around the park. The boy was walking around a bush when he was greeted by a large fluffy, fluttering moth creature with big curious eyes and a playful demeanour. It made Mono stop short for a moment with a little start of surprise. “Wow... You’re so fluffy, and big, and cute!!” The child murmured in awe at its soft white appearance, tilting his head one way and another as the oversized moth mimicked his head’s movement in midair playfully. “You remind me a little of something I saw in my world, but less sad! Where’d you come from…?” And then, a little more cautiously. “You’re friendly, right?”

The creature had no answer beyond a slight, quiet squeak. Mono considered the not-quite-answer carefully, before he decided that it was safe enough. It was just so cute, and it seemed really excited to see him! It had to be nice, right? So he reached out carefully, just to test the waters a little. With a couple of gentle pats to the soft, fluffy thorax behind its head, he found it fluttering closer to flutter around his head. “H-hey that tickles!” He giggled a little as it brushed by a cheek, and he shook his head. Yup, definitely friendly! So, he guessed that meant he made a new friend, right? A friend he didn’t know the name of, but still a friend!

Now begged the question, what did you do with a giant moth friend…? Admittedly, Mono wasn’t sure. He doubted they were like the animals he learned about here. Tilting his head curiously, he addressed his friend with a curious little chirp. “Do you like to play? Or do you wanna go for a walk? I know people take their fuzzy creatures for walks sometimes or play at the park.” He tapped his chin. “Except Mr. Rhy’s bunnies, I think they just explore their hutch. But I don’t think you would like that, ‘cause you can fly and all and your wings are so big.”

The creature, if given words, would probably agree with that. She’s much too big and fluttery for small spaces. Mono also couldn’t forget how sad the confined ones had been in his world. So... Decision made! “Okay, let’s go explore the rest of the park! Maybe we can find stuff you like or find snacks. I wonder what you eat...” He mused to himself, as he started walking and his new friend fluttered along in the air next to him, offering the odd friendly squeaking sound in return to the boy’s musings.

Probably made for an interesting sight to anyone nearby who happened to see the two playing around the park. Either playing an odd game of hide and seek or climbing trees and enjoying the view and a little rest while puzzling over what to do about snacks.

(Well, one of them climbed. The other was fluttering around to find a branch to land on to keep an eye on the other.)

By the time Terra approached, Mono was sitting comfortably on a sturdy branch. His feet kicking slightly in the air and looking pretty pleased with the afternoon’s events. He’d been having a lot of fun with his new friend, and it had been a new and rather joyful experience that he hadn’t been afforded much in his life. The creature fluttered down to land on the branch next to him, wings settling to fold against its back and feelers wiggling a bit.

At the voice, they both looked down and the one who could speak spoke up! “Oh, hey Terra! Yeah, isn’t she cute?? I just met her, but she’s really nice and good at playing tag!”

Terra had to smile because this was something Ven would do. He was always going around making new friends and playing with people. Sometimes he envied the boy's ability to befriend people, but it made Ven happy and that was all he could ever ask for, considering everything else that had happened and had gone wrong.

Blue eyes peered at the new friend Mono had made briefly before returning to rest on the young boy. "She is cute. And you said you just met her today?"

“Yup!” the boy confirmed as he reached out to gently pat the fluff behind the moth’s head. “She reminds me of the ones in my world.” He added with a little curious tilt of his head. He’d always liked the moths. They weren’t dangerous, nor did they seem like anything bad. The ones he’d found kept in that room had looked so sad, and he’d always kind of wanted to go back… But he never got to.

So meeting his new friend today felt kinda special!

Terra was half surprised the fuzzy one allowed the pat, but that was totally fine since it did. "Oh, you have things like this in your world?" It was always interesting to him to find something out like that.

He then turned his gaze to the creature who seemed content if that could be said of them. But as long as the boy was happy and he did seem that way, Terra wasn't going to say anything.

"Glad you found a new friend here."

Because that was important.

“Yup!” He confirmed with a little nod from the tree. “Most stuff is bigger than things are here.” So giant moths were abnormal here, but hardly anything strange where Mono was from. The only thing of note was their temperament seemed very calm and gentle compared to most things, and that was why he’d had an easier time trusting the creature despite its large size. They seemed like as easy a target for trouble as he and the other kids were.

“Me too. It’s kinda nice to have someone to hang out with.” He responded with a little nod. He liked his adult friends too, of course! But this was a little different, and it was nice to have a quiet companion. Someone he didn’t have to feel weird about talking to about some things that he wasn’t sure how to explain to adults who were used to very different places.

Terra couldn't help but smile at the boy, who seemed pretty enthralled with his new winged companion. Not that it was a bad thing by any means. Friends were hard to come by, unless someone's name was either Sora or Ventus. Putting his hands on his hips, Terra had to smile.

"The wings remind me of a pixie I met once. But..her wings weren't that big of course." He was of course referring to Tinkerbell, but he didn't mention her by name. Once he'd freed her of that cage the captain was holding her in, she kicked the man in the face. And then that crocodile showed up with that odd ticking sound.

Looking back at Mono now, he nodded and folded his arms across his chest. "Friends are good for things like that. Hopefully everyone here can find a good friend."

And it made him miss Ven and Aqua at that thought.

Mono perked up at the mention of pixies. Harry had mentioned them to him a little while back when the Nomes from his world were running around. They weren’t something found in his world as far as the boy could tell, so it was interesting to hear about things from other places. “Most stuffs really big where I’m from, so that makes sense.” Legs kicking back and forth idly, the boy reached over to pat the moth’s fluffy body. “What was your pixie friend like?” Mono wondered if it was ‘all bark’ like Harry had said, or if it was nicer sounding than that.

The comment gets a small nod. “Yeah, good friends who know how to be friends.” Because there were, unfortunately, people in the boy’s experience who didn’t seem to know what friendship was supposed to be. Six had meant the world to him, and then she’d left… Here was different, though. He wanted here to be different, even if he was a bit wearier of people outside the few who’d proven to care about him. “Do you got any friends here yet?”

Terra smiled at the question. "Well she was Peter Pan's friend. I just let her out of a cage, and she kicked the captain right in the nose and knocked him over." The memory was just hilarious really. But she had packed quite a punch.

Somehow he wished he'd had a Tell Phone there to show a picture or a video.

At the question about friends, the keyblade wielder nodded as he raised his hand to the moth. "I have. Although I have to say, they're not quite as fluffy as your friend here."

That didn’t sound like all bark at all! “Wow, she sounds really tough, huh?” Mono glanced down at his moth friend though, thinking about how Terra let Tinker Bell out of the cage. “That’s good that you could help her, though. There were a bunch of moths in a room back in my world… It was weird, ‘cause they were all locked in cages like your Tinker Bell friend. Always wanted to help them.” But he couldn’t, hadn’t had time and then never got the chance to go back.

The moth’s feelers wiggled back at Terra, clearly getting a sense of the guy but also maybe a little proud. She was the fluffiest friend. Thank you!

Mono laughed a soft, whispery sound at the comment. “Yeah, I dunno that people are as fluffy if your friends are people. But it’s good that you found some. I hope they’re nice.”

Terra smiled with a nod. Tinkerbell had definitely showed Captain Hook a thing or two. That crocodile thing showed p and ran the man off at the end. Looking at Mono, there was a slight nod. "Helping people when we can is a good thing." He wasn't sure if the moths had gotten free, but he wasn't going to ask.

He then let out a tiny laugh at this moth's antics. Seems it could almost understand him, which was a good thing, maybe.

Terra then looked at the boy once he laughed. He thought of someone else that he'd met along the way, but that story could wait for another day.

"They are pretty nice, and everyone here in this world has been that way for me at least."

Best not to ask. Mono would have had to say no, or at least that he couldn’t be sure, since he never got to go back and see. What with the nature of the Pale City and the cycle it was caught in? It wouldn’t have made much difference if he had, unfortunately, unless the loop was broken.

Mono was glad to hear that the guy had nice friends. He hoped that they stayed that way, because in somewhat varied experience with friends… It was better to have them than it was to not. And once they lost your trust, it was hard to open up to more again. Now he only wanted to hang onto the ones who’d earned his trust here for as long as he could.

“Yeah, that’s kinda the same for me. A lotta people here are nice and super helpful, huh?” Even if he sometimes wondered if they should be, given who and what he was. Or would be, he supposed. But for now, the boy was glad that the people he’d met were nice and hoped he got to keep being their friend. Hopefully, he thought to himself, his new moth friend would stay too. The nomes didn’t, which kinda sucked at the end of the month.

He tilted his head slightly, reaching out to give her a little pat on the fluffy part of her behind her head.

"Yup." Terra replied emphatically to the boy's question with a head nod. "I mean, I've never had to learn to cook or never got to know what it was like to forge weapons or build a house. This place has really been a completely different world where I've been able to learn things I might never have learned if I hadn't shown up here."

Sure he really missed Namine' and half of him wondered about Aqua, Ven, Riku and Sora, but they were no doubt safe where they were, well..if the darkness was anywhere safe at the moment.

But as he watched Mono, he had to smile. The boy certainly had a way with his moth friend. "Are you going to bring them home with you?"

Was he going to? Mono glanced at the moth sitting on the branch next to him with a curious expression. “I dunno. If she wants to come with me, I will? But I don’t wanna force her to go if she doesn’t want to.” He responded, still a little hesitant over thinking she was going to stick around. He really wanted her to, because he had gotten more than a little attached already while they were playing.

Plus, it was getting cold at night! It would be best for the little moth to have a cozy, warm place to stay, and his room was super comfy thanks to Nida and Ignis helping him decorate.

Of course, Mono was putting a little more thought into it than necessary. The moth was definitely going to be sticking with him, given it hadn’t tried to leave or anything all afternoon.

The keyblade wielder nodded. "If she does then you'll have to bring some food home for her, right?" Not that he really had any idea as to what a moth would eat. Leaves were his first guess, but he didn't know for sure.

He'd thought about getting a pet a few times, but wasn't sure what kind of pet would suit him. there were chocobos and cats and dogs. This was the first time he'd seen a moth for a pet or friend, but it was a good thing. Maybe she had needed a friend and found the perfect one in Mono.

Friendship was good, in whatever form it took.

“Oh, yeah! She’s been eating a lot of leaves and plants and stuff.” And she nibbled on the edge of his coat once, but then he got her more leaves and she seemed happy. So that probably was a good indication of what the moth’s preferred food was. “I should bring some stuff home with me if she does, so she doesn’t munch on stuff she shouldn’t.” Because he doesn’t want to bring any trouble into the house, after all.

He nodded. "Which leaves and which plants did she eat from?" This was asked partly out of curiousity and partly that if Mono had to get going, Terra would step in if needed and help gather the food stuffs so that the moth wouldn't be hungry at all.

The thought of the other getting into trouble by eating things she shouldn't might not have the moth welcome back a second time he supposed.

Mono doesn’t necessarily know what everything is called, it’s mostly been trial and error to see what the moth liked. “A bunch of different kinds.” He responded with a little shrug, pointing to some shrubs, and tall grass, and assorted trees. “I’ll make sure to get some of each of the ones she liked best before I go,” He decided with a little, serious nod.

Terra smiled as Mono pointed some things out. He half wondered too what the boy's guardians would say to this new addition but the other seemed pretty sure that there wouldn't be an issue.

So finally he nodded. "Do you want some help with gathering and carrying the stuff?"

Mono was of the mind that they’d be okay with the moth, if only because Nida had asked a couple of times if he’d ever want a pet. That said, the boy had not considered that they meant anything other than a giant moth. All he did worry about was making sure that his new friend was comfortable and safe and not going to disappear on him.

“If you wanna? You don’t gotta though if you got stuff to do.” The boy responded to the question with a tilt of his head, finally moving to climb out of the tree after snagging some of the leaves that hadn’t started to change colour yet.

His blue eyes remained on the boy and would catch him if he fell. He'd gotten overprotective of Ven more than once and the younger boy had scolded him, saying how big he was and how he didnt need Terra's help and all of that.

Nodding to Mono now, he smiled. "I've got time. And I wouldn't have offered if I had other stuff to do."

And he continued to make sure he could catch the boy if something happened.

While Mono could sometimes be a bit clumsy, due in part to the small growth spurt he’d had when back in his world, he seemed to be quite good at climbing. Thanks to both his many endeavors that required the skill to stay safe, and Nida’s training to help him refine the ability. He was out of the tree and back on solid ground in no time; the moth fluttering down to land on his head again as the boy tucked the leaves he’d gathered in his pocket.

“Okay, if you’re sure! I know there was a bush over this way she munched on the leaves from a lot earlier.” The boy commented, pointing in the direction they’d been playing in earlier.

Terra smiled at the moth taking a ride on the boy's head once he got out of the tree. The kid was a good climber, that much was certain. But he waited patiently as the other pointed out a bush, and he inclined his head towards it.

"Then let's make sure we get enough for her to eat."

“Yeah, thanks Terra!” He responded, starting over to the bush and beginning to work on gathering the leaves up.

The moth left the boy’s side long enough to settle on top of the bush herself and nibbled on a few of them while she watched over him and Terra both.

After helping to gather plenty of leaves, Terra gave his share to Mono.

"That should do it. If you need anything else let me know, other than that, I'll head out if you can make it home safe."

“Yeah, that’s definitely enough!” Mono agreed, carefully taking the leaves Terra had gathered that they could take home for his moth friend to eat. “Yup, we can get back okay. Thanks a bunch for your help!” The boy responded, carefully waving the man off as he turned to head back home himself.
