Logs for October
Who; Caelan and you!
What; Phone troubles, pillow forts, discussions on the weird goings on, and a seal in the tub
Where; Red building, and the docks.
When; End of September / Early October
Warnings; Mentions of nudity (Not descriptive, shape changing just doesn’t work with clothes), references to alcohol abuse (marked in thread with Nida), references to suicide (marked in thread with Nida)
What Do You Mean It’s Not Water Proof?
Caelan was experiencing some very obvious levels of confusion and frustration as he wandered up from the docks post swim that evening. His hair was still dripping and damp as he walked, eyes glued to the tell-phone that was looking rather... Less functional than it was meant to be. He hadn’t even bothered to button his shirt all the way, after the damn thing slipped out of his pockets and into the water when he was getting himself dressed and presentable by human standards.
At first, he’d only been annoyed because he’d had to stop what he was doing to fish it out of the water. Now he was doubly annoyed because the screen wasn’t lighting up. It was like the damn thing didn’t have any life in it...
Weird and very inconvenient if he had anything to say on the matter.
Which he was... At length, muttering under his breath and his accent growing a touch stronger than usual as he forgot himself. “The bleedin’ hell kind of joke is this? Really? Give the man who spends copious amounts of time near the water something that up and dies just because it gets a little wet. Can’t handle your drink at all, can yah? You finicky little box of nonsense.”
Speaking of a drink, he had a feeling he was going to need one very soon. Between that weird energy pulse a while back, the nightmares and now this? He was willing to admit he might need several.
A Fortress Fit for a Princess
Caelan wasn’t asleep when a mist slipped under his doorway, he’d come to expect at least one interruption a night since a few prior when something exploded somewhere and released a shockwave of mysterious energy. It had upset a whole lot of people (him included, for all he said he wasn’t bothered). Holly had become the most frequent guest, especially when the nightmares had begun.
Tonight he was ready though, and hoping to get the kid to talk a little more rather than the sullen insistence that she was completely fine and whatever other absurd excuses she came up with for her visit that night. Because honestly, she wasn’t the only one having nightmares, and he was starting to worry more about what they actually might have meant.
Hard to tell though if there were any connections or similarities if you weren’t talking.
Thus, tonight he was more than prepared for the visit. The living room space in his apartment had been entirely disrupted, cushions and pillows moved to the floor along with some of the chairs from the dining area, the sheets from his room and the pillows for good measure. All because he’d gotten it in his head that he was going to try one of those ‘Pillow Fort’ things that Holly had mentioned once or twice in one of her super-fact-filled-rambles.
When Holly materialized into a solid form again, she would be greeted by the sight of a very large, very chaotic looking fortress of pillows and blankets. If she ate food, there would have been all manner of sweets and snacks. Unfortunately, as happy as he was to make sure she could feed safely, he wasn’t confident in grabbing a random person off the street for her to snack on.
Someone would be bound to ask questions if they saw him lugging an unconscious body up and down the stairs... right?
So... No snacks, only a structure that was only slightly stable, but magnificent to behold (in his personal opinion).
Splish-splash
If there were any human creation that Caelan favoured over any other (aside from motor cars, they were fun) it was most decidedly the bathtub. A place to soak and relax at the end of a long day? A place where you could safely just splash around or doze off for a little nap without worrying about a predator?
It was brilliant. A private bath was practically a requirement when he was staying somewhere on a job. It wasn’t a replacement for the ocean by any means though, it did little to quiet the call in the back of his mind. It was, however, the nicest substitute on days when the call wasn’t loud, and he couldn’t be fussed with sneaking down to the shore.
Even the Lighthouse he’d purchased had a nice one installed, despite the fact that the ocean was just down the cliff side.
So after he’d finished a day busking in the market he hadn’t taken long to run a nice hot bath, grabbed his pelt, and slipped into the water like the delighted seal he was. It wasn’t as though he didn’t have the time, he wasn’t expecting any company for a while yet. Usually his visitors tended to show up slightly later.
Wildcard!
Have something you want the seal boy for in particular? Throw it at me! Also, if anyone wants something specific in a starter they should let me know. I can totally write one. <3

He focused on the question though, because Yuki had phrased it with genuine curiosity rather than be rude and mocking over it like some people might have.
“No, the most we got are these... things fixed to wires. Stationary, and someone has to direct the calls remotely from one line to another.” He responded with a little shake of his head, he still preferred a proper enchantment. Though the sort the fae used were definitely better than the ones that they’d first been given here, conversations could be made private, where the crystals here hadn’t been able to.
He could tell the admission was a bit surprising for Yuki though, so he grinned with a theatrically wide shrug. “Now that’s not to say there wont be things like this in my world at some point. From what I’ve been told since arriving, I’m from ‘the olden times’ as one of the younger arrivals so eloquently put it. I would argue that means I’m less displaced in time than many of the rest of you when one compares my world to this one, but behind by comparison when you factor in technology.”
Grinning a bit, he released Yuki’s hand with a nod. “Pleasure to meet you then, Yuki. You can call me Caelan.”
no subject
Yuki gave a small smile at the 'olden times' because as far as he could tell, this whole place was loaded with that from the clothing to the mannerisms to the transportation. Somehow with all of that it was odd to see tell phones, or something regarding cellphones. And if this meant Caelan wasn't as displaced as it seemed, so much the better.
The grey head gave a little nod as he pulled his hand back, still unused to such a gesture. "It's nice to meet you Caelan. I hope we're not stuck in this place for too long."

He knew he did, by Oberon’s foot the others were either making an absolute mess of his lighthouse or they were panicking about his disappearance from a very large scale heist... Actually after so many months? It was probably a little of both, with an inward wince he shuffled the thought to the back of his mind.
“I’m guessing you’re from a more futuristic time? At least if you know all about tell-phones you must be.” He asked, finally setting to putting himself properly to rights. Buttoning up his shirt and fussing with pinning up his damp tangled hair. Caelan was a sociable sort, and he figured he might as well try to make a little more conversation with Yuki. He’d been helpful, and it wasn’t like they had anywhere else pressing to be. At least he presumed Yuki didn’t at the moment.

The question about time was odd, but then again so was this place and the small smile faded. "I'm pretty sure most people that arrive here are." Well, except the townsfolk, they seemed perfectly happy here. And while he wondered how long they would be here, he wondered too what to do with himself during this..well whatever it was. It couldn't rightly be called a vacation or anything. And it seemed to be pretty inconvenient to more people than just him.
He had been planning on going to college..but now he was more worried about survival than anything else.
no subject
It was more food for thought though, but the sort to go over later. This young man certainly seemed like he had enough to think about. Somewhat calmed from his earlier annoyance, he did have to wonder... “What brings you down to this part of the city though, Yuki. If you don’t mind my asking? The crowd down here tends to be a little more inclined towards the unsavoury at this hour.”
Not that he counted himself in that category, not entirely. He was a thief, but one with strict principles as well, and one with a tie to the ocean. So... He had his reasons. Wasn’t his fault the ocean started yelling at him in his head to visit now and again, he was what he was.
no subject
The grey head came back up at the question about being in this particular part of the city and he shrugged as if it didn't bother him to be in a place that wasn't so nice. "The map I saw seemed a little outdated so I came out to take a look around."
He'd been wondering about schools here and hadn't seen anything as of yet which was somewhat disappointing. Didn't the children go to school here at all? And he had been about to go back but then the whole phone thing came up.
no subject
The sewers had taken the longest, but not many seemed keen to explore around down there as of yet. Too many unpleasantries hiding in them, so it wasn’t the easy escape route or great shortcut that Caelan had hoped when he gone looking for information on them. “I can get you a proper map if ya like, we’ve been making enough copies for those who need them.”
no subject
"Do the new maps point out where the schools are located?" Education was very important to this kid and even if there were kids to tutor, that would be helpful too he supposed. And while he had no idea about the sewers because those to him would be a bit more dangerous than this place, the grey head nodded.
"An updated map would definitely be helpful, thank you."
no subject
The question about schools did make the selkie stop, if only because he wasn’t entirely sure he remembered... Caelan remembered many important locations, but schools were not counted among them. What use did someone who spent most of their formative years as a seal have for schools? He’d been taught by his pod about many things, but it was largely informal and everything else he’d learned in life through firsthand experience and his own personal studies. “Well... I’m not sure about that. There must be though, right?”
Humans always had school houses. Structured learning all planned out by teachers and the like. He tilted his head thoughtfully, and if his eyes caught and reflected the evening lights in an eerie manner, it must’ve been Yuki’s imagination. “We can find out? I’ll pop in and get you a map, then we can have a look.” It was the best he could offer unfortunately, but at least it had gotten Caelan thinking on the subject. One of his closer friends here was twelve after all. Maybe she was supposed to be in school too? “It’s possible that that whatever happened to this place might’ve left them without one in good enough condition to function? Or maybe they haven’t got any teachers yet.”
no subject
At hearing the reply to his question about schools, Yuki shook his grey head. "I would tend to think so..but I was wondering if maybe they were taught at home..." His voice trailed off as he briefly thought about how backwards the place seemed to be technology wise but the apartments seemed a little more modern day like what he was personally used to. And if the kids were taught at home, all he could do was work unless somehow someway a school was available.
There was an odd look to the other's eye but he closed his eyes a moment and took a breath. This place had to be wearing on him. But the grey eyes opened back up at the mention of a map. "It wouldn't hurt to look." Even if night time was really starting to set in, it would give him something to do tonight before he turned in. But soon there was another shake of the head. "Depending on what happened.." Of course not that any of them knew what had happened to the place or caused it to be the way it was.
no subject
“Of course, it wouldn’t hurt. We’ll stop in and I’ll grab you one, even if we don’t find the schools it’ll be useful in the long run. If I find out more or there’s a drastic update, I can always get in touch with another.” Pausing, he grinned. “Well, I will if your rice trick works!” If he couldn’t? He’d either steal another person’s tell-phone for a bit, or track Yuki down the old-fashioned way.
This place could have certainly been wearing down on Yuki, and he was welcome to include the strange eye-shine his new friend sported when the light caught his large, expressive eyes in a certain way. It would happen again, and there was little that Caelan could do about it. Glamour could only hide the physical oddities so much. He’d feel a little bad perhaps to know that the guy thought his mind was playing tricks on him, but it was far more convenient that way. “So let’s find our way back towards the main part of the city, the night watch’ll be around soon.”
Yes, he knew precisely when they’d cross paths with them here at this hour. Caelan kept track of things like that.
Shifting a large bag hanging off his shoulder, he hummed an absentminded tune as they started walking. His curiosity did get the better of him a moment or two later though, “So what’re you looking for schools for, anyway?”
no subject
A smile appeared at the rice trick but he didn't comment. Grey eyes were too busy noticing the lamp lighters start to come around and he caught the part about the night watch. Finally he turned to Caelan. "Sounds like we should get going then." He didn't know if the black belt he had in martial arts would be enough to stop more unsavoury characters that might start coming out of the woodwork or stonework.
Turning at the question about schools, he shrugged. "Schools are common where I'm from so I thought they might be present here." But maybe he was wrong in assuming such a thing and wasn't going to push the issue. What was here was here and what wasn't, wasn't.
no subject
So he gestured ahead and led on, “Yeah? I was more curious if you had a reason to seek one out. Like if you were a student or a teacher?” Caelan was chatty and nosy by nature, and there really were some interesting people that had arrived to get to know. He figured that he might as well find out more about Yuki while they walked towards the Gullwings office.
no subject
It wasn't a lie and he wasn't trying to do that to this person. But old habits were tough to break, like sometimes going out of his way to make sure he didn't transform in case the curse was back on in this place. It didn't 'feel' like it, but who knew. He was pretty damn sure he'd travelled back in time somehow and would've never said that was possible either. Yet here he was doing that with this man named Caelan.
no subject
And he had no reason to question Yuki on his word. It sounded reasonable enough to him, “That makes sense, I suppose. I’m guessing that you’re finding more to be unfamiliar than familiar, yeah?”
no subject
"So ya..it's definitely more unfamiliar than familiar." Yuki's tone had gone quieter and he tore his eyes away because staring wasn't polite.
no subject
“I thought as much...” He responded with a sympathetic smile. In some ways he had it easy. “For me, it was more like... Stepping into a strange imitation of my time? It’s very similar, but also not.” Either specific things were different, or the place was lacking. There were absences here and there that he couldn’t help but notice. Not unlike, he supposed, the schools Yuki had been looking for.
Glancing back at the docks one last time, a silent little farewell to the ocean, he turned his attention to the road ahead. “I’d probably be more lost if I stepped into a world like yours, if my lack of understanding on the odd bits of technology like the tell-phones is anything to go by.” He chuckled a little, he doubted he’d live long enough to see such times... He was too foolish and prone to stirring up trouble, but it would be neat if he managed to stick around that long.
no subject
"So you..live in a time like this?" It was hard to imagine that there were people that he would meet in his particular lifetime that had lived in a time like this. Talk about not being able to wrap his head around it.
But Caelan's words about not being good at technology got him to smile just a little. "There's always someone new to things like phones back where I'm from. And technology advances all of the time, so everyone has to have a new starting point somewhere." He thought back to Miss Honda and how he'd spent awhile tutoring her to get her to pass a test she'd gotten upset over failing. Grey eyes turned to the other and nodded. "Someone would be around to help you out, I'm sure of it."
no subject
Caelan walked along, tuning their path towards the city and giving the part of the harbour district with smithies some space on instinct. “It’s hard to say more about similarities though, not without more exploring I expect.”
It was still interesting to hear about other worlds and the way technology had advanced. He wasn’t sure he cared much for the phones, but if motor cars got better over the years he could certainly see that being fun. Still, he hummed a little at the idea that if he had ended up in a futuristic world that people would offer him help. “Well, if everyone where you’re from is as quick to offer help as you are, I believe it.”
no subject
"I guess we'll have to find out more about it." There was something of determination in his tone, but it would give him something to do other than to mope about not being home and missing his date that he'd had before he suddenly showed up.
Looking over at Caelan at the help comment, he smiled. "Where I'm from a lot of people are pretty friendly." If he could somehow meet Miss Honda, he'd definitely believe it was true.
no subject
Not always, but often enough... He just wasn’t going to ask, because that would get complicated. It also might’ve been a bit rude, after all. Caelan minded his manners, unless given a reason to not.
Oh, How interesting... He noticed the determination in the young man’s tone, and it was good to hear. Yuki would need it, being stuck in a world like this. “With an attitude like that we certainly will, Yuki.” He responded in a light, pleased tone. “With enough people trying to figure things out, some answers are bound to be revealed.”
He hummed a little, “You’re world does sound rather nice then!” Caelan couldn’t help but be a little more curious now. Between the determination and talk of Yuki’s world? He couldn’t help it. “What was it you did in your world, before you arrived here?”
no subject
When the other mentioned that his world sounded nice, it hadn't always been that way for him. But he wasn't going to go that particular route here. So the question made him smile a little. "I was a student but that doesn't seem like that's an option here unless we find something else out." He kept walking with his companion, hoping they'd get to their destination and then he could take a look around. And all the while, he had the sinking feeling that he might be out of luck.
no subject
Of course, there were also people he’d gotten rather attached to. People he’d started feeling responsible for, that he would rather see go home before he left so he wouldn’t have to worry about them.
Soft, he was going soft here. Actually, he had always been soft... He just hadn’t expected to end up taking to people here as he had.
“A student, huh...? So that’s why you were looking for schools? You want to keep learning, then.” Huh... Yeah, the selkie supposed that made sense. Not that he knew much of Yuki’s life back home, but it did connect a few dots.
Their stroll would eventually lead them towards the part of the city that the Gullwings had positioned itself when Yuna got the funding for it. A very nice space, furnished stylishly in his opinion. Meant for comfort and professionalism. Caelan actually had his own desk, though he rarely used it aside from when he needed to stash extra blank sheets of sheet music to compose when he was bored and felt like being a pest to his fellow members.
no subject
But once the other asked about schooling, he nodded. "I'm probably not going to find what I'm looking for, but..I guess I really don't know for sure unless I go look for it first."
Coming up on the Gullwings office, Yuki couldn't help but look around once they got inside. It had furniture and books here, the first he'd seen since arriving so that was encouraging at least. It seemed quaint and quiet, which were definitely pluses in a quiet kid's book. "Wow..this place almost looks modern."
Like the apartments.
no subject
Really, he was fond of what Yuna had done with the place. It suited his tastes, and it made for a comfortable space to work and harass his colleagues on a day where there wasn’t quite enough going on to keep his hands busy. “Yuna, our lovely leader, has really built something nice here. We don’t have many people working with us yet, but it’s really come together. I dunno if Jagger is around, but he’s in charge of the office itself. Keeping it all organized and filing things.” He tilted his head for a moment before he added, “Basically the boring stuff. Saves us a lot of time though.”
Caelan was only fond of sorting and organizing if he was trying to put a heist together, which there hadn’t been a call for since he arrived in this world. It was almost disappointing in a way, but at the same time that was because usually he only stole things that needed stealing. Things that had been taken from someone to begin with, that needed to be returned.
