[Clearing his throat a little, Llewellyn tried to think of where to start, he’s been snooping around for a few days and compiling some notes.]
Hello! I’m sure everyone is rather used to these sorts of broadcasts now, but uh— I’ve only just arrived in the last few days. My name is Llewellyn Watts-Maresh, to get introductions out of the way.
I’ve been catching up on the goings on already, seems like there’s a lot going on right now that I’d like to offer my assistance with. So! I’ll skip directly to the main point of my broadcast.
While this world is a significant improvement on my last... I’m finding myself in need of a starting point. I’m accustomed to having an office to work from, but I don’t believe I’ll have the funds to open something myself from the start. Is there possibly a private investigation firm already that would be looking for a detective? I… don’t need much space. I’ve gotten used to taking my work outdoors in the past, but a desk to keep my notes and work at on occasion would be appreciated.
[And he paused, humming a little as he mulled over a secondary thought he’d been playing with since he arrived.]
That aside, I’m also knowledgeable with floriography. Even if this worlds is different from my own, I’m a fast study. I’ve had practice in making arrangements for various meanings and occasions, and before I was pulled here I was dabbling in gardening…? So if anyone is looking for some part-time help there, I wouldn’t mind doing that on the side. I uh— I like to keep busy.
[And if he and his husband ever do figure out how to purchase a home, he knows they’ll need the money for it. Being cooped up in a small apartment is not ideal long term.]
Mm… That should do it, thank you.
2 - Historium
Llewellyn might have been a little slower to get here than he normally would have been, too distracted with this new world and getting his feet under him. But any sort of library was a good starting point to see what kind of references were available when you wanted to investigate and learn more about certain things about a place that might not be readily available through word of mouth. Or things that were just easier to find out on your own, as he was prone to doing.
It was… a lot more disorganized than the last giant library he’d frequented, but that actually wasn’t a big issue for the detective. His thought process already tended towards the chaotic and scattered, so he actually felt rather at home in the place. It wasn’t hard to start at one shelf, scan the titles, and grab something before he continued onward.
Anyone around the Historium would see Llewellyn either with a few books under his arm, or sitting on a table (using the chair as a footrest) and leafing through a selection curiously. Once in a while, he’d stop, jot a few thoughts down in messy scrawl in his notebook, and then continue reading…
He’s not so absorbed in his task that he doesn’t notice anyone else around him. Llewellyn could be quite paranoid and didn’t enjoy being surprised, so unless you’re particularly sneaky, he would be quite aware if someone were to approach…
3 - Market
There were several places that Llewellyn could be guaranteed to be found if you needed him. The first being where ever he worked (he truly was a workaholic at times), with his husband (obvious, perhaps), and the market… The last being because Llewellyn usually found himself in need of a snack every few hours, he tended to think better on a full stomach and his metabolism was rather high given how little he sat around.
It was also his other go to for making contacts and gathering information on a place. People talked, especially shop and food stall employees. They saw or heard about everything going on in the city, after all, and if you were a frequent enough customer, they tended to appreciate your business enough to be on friendly terms.
Given this was another new world… Llewellyn was starting from scratch. So over the course of his first few weeks in this place, through the day, he’d take a stroll through the market whenever he was feeling hungry. Every time he’d stop somewhere, he’d take a few minutes to chat and get to know the person working, he might not remember names right away, but if he stopped there frequently enough he’d start to commit things to memory (and he certainly wrote more important conversations down).
If approached, Llewellyn would actually be quite happy to talk, as long as no one minded his snacking… He’d even offer to share.

Humming a little, he walked a little closer. After all, Llewellyn tended to be sociable, and he had his snacks now to enjoy. Might as well see if this stranger had anything interesting to say. He still had a lot of catching up to do. “Someone told me that they have pleasant temperaments, while birds this large where I’m from tend to be rather disagreeable to human company.”
Pausing to take a bite of his pretzel, he eye’d the purchases Ignis had been making. That was quite a lot of fish and crustaceans, made him wonder if the man was organizing something or if he had a lot of people to feed… How interesting. “That’s uh— quite a purchase you have there? You must be quite the chef, or know one.” He commented absentmindedly, the detective could think of a few very good dishes that involved some of the things he’d seen packaged up.
no subject
It amused him that this man was inspecting the bird closer. And again Nida passed through his mind because the birds really did have even temperaments but that somehow changed with Nida. "The ones here mostly seem tame and easy to get along with." Again, unless your name was Nida.
Looking back at the crabs, Ignis nodded. "I'm a chef at the hunting lodge here. Crabs are familiar cooking, so I thought to pop down here and see what I can do with them." Which of course meant he had a lot of people to feed between the hunters, the regulars and the curious. And of course he tried to bring food home for his fiancée'.

Finally, tearing his attention away from the chocobo, he gave Ignis his attention proper. So he was correct in his guess that the man was a chef. Smiling a little, he glanced at the packages thoughtfully. So crabs were a normality of sorts it seemed that existed in other worlds, where chocobos were a unique creature that took the place of horses in others… Fascinating.
“Well, the lodge is lucky to have your uh— talents by the looks of it. Crab is good, I knew someone who made excellent crab cakes once, and crab bisque isn’t bad either.” He responded, clearly the sort to eat just about anything. Perhaps that had to do with the fact that he couldn’t cook himself and tended to rely on restaurants and whatever food stands were available.
no subject
It was then that he noticed the man was looking more at him now and was giving out dishes that he'd never heard of. However the scholar in him was immediately intrigued and mentally pondered what these dishes looked like. "Crab cakes?" Ignis asked, interested. And he had to think if he'd ever heard of anyone making crab bisque. And the more he thought about it, the more he had to silently admit that was a thing he hadn't heard of.
He had access to cookbooks and of course this was something he planned to fully investigate. Maybe it was time to get in the kitchen after doing a bit of research.
no subject
One could point out that he didn’t make them either, but he did eat them on occasion. “Mm… They’re small, fried cakes with crab and other seasoning in them? They’re a simple dish, I suppose, but quite delicious.” Llewellyn responded, lowering his pretzel snack while he gestured with his free hand rather animatedly. Food was an exciting topic, and admittedly the detective was always curious about dishes from other worlds or eras that were later than his.
no subject
However, his green eyes hadn't missed that..whatever bread thing the other was waving around. He hadn't seen anything like that before today..but then again maybe he had missed it which would be a shame really. "And I have a question for you if I may."
no subject
Going back to take another bite of his snack, his eyebrows rose a little at the question. Llewellyn wondered what the man wanted to know, given he hadn’t been here long… Then again, maybe he had another question about crab cakes. That would be unfortunate, given he really didn’t cook himself and couldn’t offer any tips. “Mm… You may, though I can’t say that I can promise a satisfying answer. That’s entirely dependent on what your question is.”
no subject
And if it didn't take off in a bot of time he'd try something else and this fried crab cake thing was a new idea he was definitely going to pursue. And if that didn't work, he'd let them go.
But at being given the go ahead for his question, Ignis nodded. "I was wondering if you could tell me what that is in your hand that you're eating."
He'd never seen anything like it.
no subject
Which would be a great day… Neither of the men could really cook.
Llewellyn was pleasantly surprised to find the question was one that he could easily (and gladly) answer. Glancing at the baked good in his hand, he offered a smile. “Oh! Yes, of course. They’re called pretzels, uh…” He realized that didn’t really tell Ignis what they were, so much as the name. “They’re bread dough, rolled out and twisted into a knot. They’re put in a lye bath and then baked, usually with salt. At least they were in my world. I’ve more recently been introduced to a few other varieties that were all quite good too. Like dessert styled pretzels, or pretzels stuffed with cheese and seasoned.”
no subject
If he did say so himself that was.
But that's what he was going to be making. He had a penchant for seafood though he wouldn't discuss why that was. And he had shown Noct the seafood festival while they were on their journey. Hopefully this man would come by at some point and check it all out. As Ignis was used to cooking for four grown men, he and Nida didn't put away half
of what he bought and downsizing the cooking had been both a bit puzzling and a challenge.
However his attention went back to the treat in the other man's hand and tried to study it without blatantly staring at it because that was rude. But he listened avidly and even if he wasn't familiar with the process, he could pull out his scholarly side and do research.
"Dessert pretzels." he mused. Stuffed with cheese? Well he knew one man who would very willingly go along with his culinary adventures and who knew what they could come up with. So the advisor smiled with a nod. "That all sounds like quite a worthy time investment."
no subject
Llewellyn was an observant man, some would say too observant and nosy. So it was easy enough to notice that Ignis was trying to not stare at the pretzel. Manners were an odd thing, and he could respect when people tried to adhere to them.. But it wasn’t as though looking at the pretzel seemed rude to him. Staring at him while he ate it? Perhaps a little odd, yes, but not the pretzel he was simply holding. That aside… The detective rummaged around a suit pocket with his free hand. Pulling something wrapped carefully in a handkerchief out, before he unwrapped it to reveal a second pretzel. He had bought a second knowing he’d eventually get hungry again and it would save him a trip back. Rhy could chastise him for keeping snacks in his suit pockets later, though he would argue that he’d at least wrapped it. It was a habit, and one that he wouldn’t break.
But Ignis seemed curious, and it would save a little awkwardness to just give it away. “You can try if you like, they’re uh— quite worth it in my opinion.”
no subject
And then a second pretzel materialized and Ignis couldn't help but slightly chuckle at the sight. But the advisor wasn't certain this beautiful piece of dough offer should be taken lightly though he'd only break off a small piece if the other was certain. It looked mouthwatering and of course his mind was going over the earlier instructions that Llewellyn had given to him as for its preparation and cooking methods.
"Are you certain?"
no subject
Then the detective belatedly recalled his old partner, Jackson, who had turned up his nose rather firmly in trying them. He’d thought they looked strange, and he wasn’t fond of trying new things for all he did. Occasionally he’d bring the detective one to cheer him up… Such an odd man, but Llewellyn missed him. That said, the point was that he realized that Ignis might not actually want it. “That is, if you actually want it. If not, I can keep it for later.” He added with an awkward shrug.
no subject
So he gently took the doughy treat and nodded his thanks. Taking a bite, the salt and dough seemed to melt together which made it wonderful. Okay, now he was definitely going to have to make these. And Nida would be the victim of his tries until he got it right.
Keeping his face somewhat neutral, Ignis pulled back and looked at the inside of the thing which seemed to be made of nothing but dough. "This is quite the treat."
no subject
Perhaps, Llewellyn supposed, the man was trying to pick apart the flavour notes and get an idea for what might go into them. He was a cook, after all.
His smiled spread a little more widely though at the comment, “That they are. I’ve uh— come to think of them as a staple of my day. They always make a nice snack or a quick lunch in a pinch.” Which happened on occasion when you were working a case and too busy to stop for a proper meal.
no subject
Maybe someday.
But Llewellyn's words about them being lunch had him curious. "A quick lunch..mayhaps sometimes accompanied by a salad." A starch and vegetable made sense if a protein wasn't handy at the time.
no subject
That being said, such single-mindedness had made him a bit blind to trouble on occasion.
no subject
Sometimes it had been a challenge to come up with new recipehs. And he had to go with whatever was available because the market wasn't always available or a good idea to go and waste gas and go out of their way to get ingredients.
no subject
It was hard for him to imagine sitting down for a meal sometimes, aside from at the end of the day when he or Rhy brought home a full meal to share together… But it was a hard mindset for him to get into regularly, Llewellyn’s life had been constantly on the go for years. He hadn’t been welcome at his first place of work which meant his ‘office’ had been outside while he walked, and his life had been rather full of turmoil that made him throw himself headfirst into case after case.
On the one hand, he was one of the youngest people to make detective in Toronto at the time. On the other, it meant grabbing something fast and easy to eat while he walked more often than not. Even at the Sphere, much of his time was spent focusing on cases than on settling… So it was a new idea, one that he was at least trying to work on with the help of his husband and starting fresh in a new world.
no subject
Working at the Lodge he'd sort of been 'adopted' by the Hunters there. Ignis was always quick and efficient with meals and of course there were times he'd been a Hunter in his own right. So the lads there knew he could Hunt and cook and there was the utmost respect for a man who could wield a knife just as fiercely on the field and in the kitchen. And if he didn't want to be bothered the hunters covered for him. Of course he was certain that by extension that would be given to his friends.
no subject
“Thank you, I’ll uh— try to keep that in mind then. It might be good to have a quiet space to sort out my notes if I need a different view than the office or the gardens.” And if Rhy wanted to eat out, perhaps he’d suggest they stop by for a meal once in a while. They did need to find a few new places to frequent when they were out.
Wrap?
"I must apologize, as I do believe speaking on culinary matters has temporarily robbed me of my manners. I'm Ignis Scientia, it's a pleasure to meet you." He had no idea if the man would reciprocate in turn, but it was worth it. "And if you decide to come to the Lodge, your husband is welcome as well should you choose to do so."
There was a smile. "And I must thank you for allowing me to partake of your doughy treat."
Sure!
Instead, he tucked his hands back in his pockets and offered a polite nod. “Thank you for the invite. I’ll be sure to keep that in mind. I was happy to share, it’s good to try new things… right?” He added with a grin before removing a hand from his jacket pocket to wave in what he thought might be the direction of the lodge. “I presume you must be on your way though, and I should get back to my own day… It was good to meet you though, I look forward to speaking again.” He added, not wanting to keep the man. Plus, he had an office to find, needing to secure more work himself.
