Who; Caelan and you!
What; Caelan is back from the dead, and he’s not happy. 1 Open log & 1 Open Network Post
Where; The fountain square, and tell-phone network.
When; Early November, post Bear defeat
Warnings; Expected references to a violent death, probably alcohol at some point, and to note: He will be blind for these threads, as per the cost of resurrection. Expect a less charming and happy seal man for a while.
The Fountain Square
Being returned to the city was a relief, honestly. Even if he couldn’t see the place he’d been, he knew he wasn’t in there anymore. The air was fresher, and he could feel the sun on his skin. It was a vast improvement on the last few days, in his opinion. He’d be happier if he could A. See it and B. Knew where the fuck his stuff had ended up post bear-mauling.
Yes, Caelan has priorities. The whole processing his death thing can wait until after he finds his sealskin.
Instead, he frowned at the world around him, eyes unfocused and not fixing on anything in particular. Standing around here unfortunately wasn’t going to get him anywhere, and even if he couldn’t really see where he was going he could at least find some out of the way place to sit and figure out how he’d get home.
... Or maybe the tavern.
So he took two steps... and ended up tripping with an uncharacteristic lack of grace right over the side of the fountain into the water with a splash and an indignant sound.
Because of course he would, why wouldn’t that happen next...?
Rather than kick up a fuss, he just let himself lay in the fountain for a minute or two. It’s fine, selkies can’t die by drowning, he’s not risking another trip to the mausoleum. He just needed a minute to reflect on all the poor life choices that led him right up to this moment.
Definitely going to need a drink... More than one, in fact.

[Alright, Caelan very rarely makes use of the network. He hates the tell-phone for multiple reasons, and he’s more of a face-to-face kind of guy. But things are complicated, and he’s getting anxious (Him! Anxious!) about something very specific.
And to make matters worse, it’s not like he can do much about it right now. He can’t see, his eyes haven’t worked since he woke up to Athony telling him what the deal was with dying in this world. Sure, he was glad that he wasn’t permanently dead and all, but this was still less than ideal.]
So as if being murdered by a flea-infested, walking rug wasn’t bad enough— [Oh yes, his accent is stronger today. Caelan couldn’t be bothered to control his voice at all right now. He’s in a mood. Also, yeah, he was missing all this time because he had a run in with the demon bear.] apparently while death isn’t permanent, it’s not without it’s “complications.”
[Can you hear the air quotes? They’re there.
He paused to take a deep breath, he needs to not sound so agitated. He’s got his image to think about.]
My eyes are fucked up. By which I mean they don’t work at all at the moment. It’s making another problem of mine a little more complicated. In the rush to get away from the bastard, I lost my satchel. It’s large, brownish, probably covered in blood. Someone else is more likely to see it before I do. [Ha...] so I’d appreciate if someone would give me a call if they’ve noticed it somewhere since my run in with the bear a few weeks back.
I’ll even reward the person who does depending on how it goes.
(ooc: Caelan will be in need of assistance for a few in game days until his eyes start working, but he will be snippy if you ask what’s in the bag. As of yet, no one has it and it’s still missing. If you want to have had that your character already found it, hit me up on

I’m at my apartment at the moment. You’re welcome to try if you want, because it’s damned annoying not being able to find anything. I fell in the bloody fountain when I got back.
[So once he’d gotten home, he stayed there. Now he had an empty bottle of whiskey that he had drunk in a futile attempt to get drunk enough to dull the memories of his death. Which was unfortunate because he couldn’t get drunk off of human alcohol without drinking a lot more than that. So now he’s just sad and grumpy.
He definitely sounds it as he continued, and just a little anxious.]
That’d be a help, Yuna. I really need the damned thing back.
[Before the wrong person found it and realized what the heck it was.]

Then I'll come over.
It shouldn't take long.
[She doesn't want to leave him blind and having the entire Gullwings looking out for his satchel, will mean that it'll be found.]
no subject
And... well, Jagger looking was a good idea. Yeah, if the man got too curious with what was in the bag he might finally put two and two together on the greater picture... But at least the guy already had a vague idea.]
The door’s unlocked, I’ve had a few people coming and going since I got back.
[He’s been in a lot of trouble, honestly.]

[It doesn't take Yuna very long to send out the message to those within the Gullwings and head out towards Caelan's apartment. For those she can't get ahold of, she leaves a note at the office, indicating that finding Caelan's satchel was top priority.
She arrives at Caelan's apartment about twenty minutes after their call had ended. Yuna considers knocking but walks inside after remembering the fact that he's blind.]
Caelan? Are you here?
I brought you something to eat.
no subject
Her arrival is something of a relief though, he was so used to being out and social with everyone. Staying in was... weird. It would continue to be until he got used to this, or the effects wore off.]
Yuna? Yeah, I’m over here on the sofa.
[Food? Food was definitely welcome. Caelan didn’t really buy a lot of food, because normally he’d go down to the water and catch some fish to eat as a seal. He couldn’t do that for several reasons now.]
Did you? Thanks, I could definitely eat.

[Yuna takes a seat next to Caelan and inspects his eyes. It doesn't look like the Blind spell but she's going to try anyway. Magic curled around her as she places her hand on Caelan's cheek. It's warm but as the magic sinks into her friends skin, he'll notice that there is no change.]
I don't think I can cure this.
[Though any acks and pains would have vanished with her warm touch.]
no subject
A good guess, honestly. I already took a dive in the fountain trying to get around, not sure I wanted to try maneuvering around the market like this.
[He shifted a little on the sofa, letting Yuna get a look at his eyes. At least he was guessing she was until she spoke up and confirmed it.]
Yeah, I thought as much... Was worth a shot though, right? Thanks for trying, Yuna.
[He was unsurprised, disappointed, but unsurprised...]
no subject
I'll bring you food until you're able to see again. I don't want my best explorer to get hurt trying to eat.
[It isn't a time to tease but Yuna isn't sure what else to do. Her spell hadn't worked and her magic is limited in this world. She can continue to draw power from her sphere's or from her own soul but it needs time to recover.]
I'm sorry. I can only cure some kinds of blindness and I haven't studied my white magic for some time. I use my guns more.
no subject
Well, if this lasts long, I’m sure you’ll have other opportunities to see me blundering around. I can’t very well stay in these four walls forever, going to have to get used to it if it lasts a while.
[Shrugging lightly at the apology, he continued.]
I get the feeling that it’s not something magic could cure anyway, at least from the way Athony spoke when I woke up. It’s because I died, or something like that. So the fact that you tried at all is grand, Yuna. I’ll either get them back eventually or I’ll get used to it.
no subject
[She keeps her expression light but there is no hiding the worry in her voice.] I wish I had been there to protect you. I had fought the bear, later. I couldn't forgive it for what it had done. [No one had told her that the bear killed Caelan but Yuna's from a world with horrible monsters and it's an easy mental leap to guess the truth.]
I'm sure you'll get it back.
I don't think Athony or anyone would want us to be in a state where we can't live... not when they brought us here to live. [That doesn't really make the current situation better but Yuna is a fan of hope.]
no subject
[He responded cheekily, a little of his good humour and usual silliness bleeding back into his voice for a moment. Just for a moment until the subject of the bear was brought up, and the frown returned.]
Yeah... I know you would have, but in a way it was my own damned fault for being out after dark. Couldn’t really help it, but... Anyway, the point is that you and the rest of the group took care of it. Now no one has to worry about it again, right?
[He nodded a little, in hindsight the whole ‘death not being permanent here’ thing made sense. Even if it was very strange.]
I certainly didn’t expect to wake up after that. Dead is dead in my world, at least for most. Guess it’d be pretty poor of them to bring people into this mess and let them die here.
It’s just not a perfect process, I suppose.
no subject
Dead is dead…. huh.
That isn't how it is in Spira. The dead need guidance or they will remain and prey upon the living. Those who are near death can be returned if their spirits have not fully left their body. With magic or potions. I think what is done here is different. Your soul belongs in your world… [She doesn't think it'd be able to find its way back there.]
It is different here. I don't know how to think about it.
no subject
If I can, yeah. I didn’t have my phone on me at the time, otherwise I might’ve tried to get some help.
[He paused before adding with a grimace,]
I don’t know for sure though; I got more than a little angry around it? Wasn’t really thinking straight by the time it was too late.
[Caelan knew he had a temper, but in hindsight it had been more than a little weird to get that angry around the creature.
The matter of souls is a weird one, Fae didn’t generally know what happened after death. If they went on to another place or not. They weren’t usually welcome in holy places, but they weren’t demons either, so it was hard to say. So a dead fae was absolutely dead. Nothing lingered. Not that he could pose that little idea to Yuna right now. So all he could do was nod in response,]
Yeah... I mean, there is such a thing as ‘ghosts’ in my world, but unless a person has unfinished business or died in a particularly unpleasant way their soul moves on.
no subject
Ah, yes. I understand. I want to ask the library about the creatures here. I don't think that bear was from here but there are other things that we should protect ourselves from. [She worries at her lower lip as her thoughts twist and turn down uncertain paths.
With so many threads intertwining, what is at the end where the threads meet?
Her thoughts snap back as Caelan talks about death.] Is that so? Unless the person has accepted death while still alive, the souls in Spira remain. It was the job of the summoners to send the spirits to the farplane to rest. I think it's hard... for anyone to accept death.
no subject
The bear certainly was more than anything we’ve seen around this place so far... [The giant sharks and eels were easier to avoid than the bloody bear.] Still, wouldn’t hurt to see if there’s anything we should know about the things that are from here. Just in case they have any fun surprises for us.
[And by fun he meant horrifying, if the humorous edge to his tone were anything to go by.
Caelan, of course, couldn’t deny that she had a point though... Regardless of the similarities or differences around how death worked between their worlds. His tone loses the humour, thoughtful and just a touch softer. ]
Yeah, I’ve never been the sort to accept the idea. Not without a fight anyway... Nearly died a few times before in my own world, you know? I get in trouble, but was more prone to close calls before I formed my group... but this was the most powerless to do anything about it that I’ve ever felt.
