The Fountain Square

Being returned to the city was a relief, honestly. Even if he couldn’t see the place he’d been, he knew he wasn’t in there anymore. The air was fresher, and he could feel the sun on his skin. It was a vast improvement on the last few days, in his opinion. He’d be happier if he could A. See it and B. Knew where the fuck his stuff had ended up post bear-mauling.

Yes, Caelan has priorities. The whole processing his death thing can wait until after he finds his sealskin.

Instead, he frowned at the world around him, eyes unfocused and not fixing on anything in particular. Standing around here unfortunately wasn’t going to get him anywhere, and even if he couldn’t really see where he was going he could at least find some out of the way place to sit and figure out how he’d get home.

... Or maybe the tavern.

So he took two steps... and ended up tripping with an uncharacteristic lack of grace right over the side of the fountain into the water with a splash and an indignant sound.

Because of course he would, why wouldn’t that happen next...?

Rather than kick up a fuss, he just let himself lay in the fountain for a minute or two. It’s fine, selkies can’t die by drowning, he’s not risking another trip to the mausoleum. He just needed a minute to reflect on all the poor life choices that led him right up to this moment.

Definitely going to need a drink... More than one, in fact.

Network

[Alright, Caelan very rarely makes use of the network. He hates the tell-phone for multiple reasons, and he’s more of a face-to-face kind of guy. But things are complicated, and he’s getting anxious (Him! Anxious!) about something very specific.

And to make matters worse, it’s not like he can do much about it right now. He can’t see, his eyes haven’t worked since he woke up to Athony telling him what the deal was with dying in this world. Sure, he was glad that he wasn’t permanently dead and all, but this was still less than ideal.]

So as if being murdered by a flea-infested, walking rug wasn’t bad enough— [Oh yes, his accent is stronger today. Caelan couldn’t be bothered to control his voice at all right now. He’s in a mood. Also, yeah, he was missing all this time because he had a run in with the demon bear.] apparently while death isn’t permanent, it’s not without it’s “complications.”

[Can you hear the air quotes? They’re there.

He paused to take a deep breath, he needs to not sound so agitated. He’s got his image to think about.]

My eyes are fucked up. By which I mean they don’t work at all at the moment. It’s making another problem of mine a little more complicated. In the rush to get away from the bastard, I lost my satchel. It’s large, brownish, probably covered in blood. Someone else is more likely to see it before I do. [Ha...] so I’d appreciate if someone would give me a call if they’ve noticed it somewhere since my run in with the bear a few weeks back.

I’ll even reward the person who does depending on how it goes.

(ooc: Caelan will be in need of assistance for a few in game days until his eyes start working, but he will be snippy if you ask what’s in the bag. As of yet, no one has it and it’s still missing. If you want to have had that your character already found it, hit me up on

Caelan!

[Her voice is high pitched and excited. She hasn't heard form him since he'd gone missing and while Yuna knew he was dead, it's very different hearing his voice as it is now.]

I can look for your satchel. I'll get all the Gullwings on it and call the captain to see if anyone has turned it in... Where are you? Maybe I can help your eyes somehow?

[Her healing isn't perfect but she has some magic that can help again magical blindness.]

[Caelan winced a little at the high pitch in her tone, he lost his sight not his hearing!]

I’m at my apartment at the moment. You’re welcome to try if you want, because it’s damned annoying not being able to find anything. I fell in the bloody fountain when I got back.

[So once he’d gotten home, he stayed there. Now he had an empty bottle of whiskey that he had drunk in a futile attempt to get drunk enough to dull the memories of his death. Which was unfortunate because he couldn’t get drunk off of human alcohol without drinking a lot more than that. So now he’s just sad and grumpy.

He definitely sounds it as he continued, and just a little anxious.]

That’d be a help, Yuna. I really need the damned thing back.

[Before the wrong person found it and realized what the heck it was.]

People were happy to tell Guards when there where things that needed dealt with. A strange man in the fountain definitely counted as that. Which was why Nida approached. Even opened his mouth to order the guy out and tell him to walk the drink off, but he processes who it is.

"Caelan," he says, soft and concerned. His friend was back. Oh bless. He moves forward and touches the man in the water.

"You shouldn't be in there By-The-Way."

[Well, if nothing else, the woman is very helpful. So when she hears something on her communicator she responds immediately.]

Approximately where do you last remember the item being? What does it contain? I would be happy to assist, but would not wish to send you toward an incorrect bag!

Being in the fountain as he was, and blind, he didn’t really notice someone approaching the fountain until he felt the water being disturbed and a hand nudging his arm. Shit... Someone probably had a problem with a weirdo lying around in a fountain.

“Can’t catch a break...” he muttered as he sat up and water ran off him, trails dripping out of his hair and looking very much a mess compared to how he liked to present himself. His clothes were, unsurprisingly, waterlogged. Probably dumb in the weather for the time of year... Damned clothes. This is why being naked was easier. “I’m going, I’m going...” He groused a bit, because of course he didn’t realize the person was Nida.

”You shouldn’t be in there By-The-Way.”

And then he caught on. His head turning in the direction of the voice, even if his eyes didn’t focus on anything in particular. “Nida...?” He tilted his head, “I admit it’s not my first choice for a dip, but the bloody thing got in my fucking way.”

[He was... pretty sure he knew this voice. At least a little, if memory served.]

That’s a good question, dear lady, the ‘where’ is a bit vague. I was being chased by a giant monster bear, so I’m afraid my attention was on not letting it get another hit in. I was cutting through the market when I ran into it.

[His tone falls a bit flat at the question of what the bag contained.]

Personal items. Trust me. You’ll know it’s mine. I was bleeding a lot when I had to dump the thing.

I'll send out the word to the others and see if Jagger can find it. He is very skilled at finding things.

Then I'll come over.

It shouldn't take long.

[She doesn't want to leave him blind and having the entire Gullwings looking out for his satchel, will mean that it'll be found.]

[He’s not sure if her magic will do any good, but he’ willing to let her try.

And... well, Jagger looking was a good idea. Yeah, if the man got too curious with what was in the bag he might finally put two and two together on the greater picture... But at least the guy already had a vague idea.]

The door’s unlocked, I’ve had a few people coming and going since I got back.

[He’s been in a lot of trouble, honestly.]

Since the whole bear thing had been done, Yuki had avoided contacting the Gullwings to try to talk to Miss Yuna. He'd heard about his friend too and that kept him in self isolation while trying to process all of that. Now though he went out, on the intended mission to get flowers to bring by the Carpentry shop after hours.

On his way there he passed by the fountain and heard a splash. Looking over to see what had caused the noise, grey eyes discovered Caelan in the fountain. As the other sat there, Yuki went over.

"Caelan..are you okay?" Why was he just sitting there?

...You died?

[ Her voice is small, and most unlike her. Normally she'd be all geared up and ready to give Caelan the earful of his life. Just rip him a new one for going MIA for fucking weeks and not telling her where he was, but that fire's extinguished just as quick as it's lit.

He died, and she didn't even know. She'd been mad at him this whole time...she's not even questioning how he's back right now, she's just ...sad. ]

[... ... ... ... Fuck.

In hindsight, he should have anticipated that Holly would get this message as it came through.

Unfortunately, he’d been panicked and anxious and he couldn’t have even gone out to find her if he tried because he couldn’t see to get to her building without it being fraught with difficulties that he wasn’t yet accustomed to.

This was not how he wanted the kid to find out (if he’d even told her at all).

So he’s a lot more subdued than he was earlier when he responded.]

Yeah... Yeah, I did.

Where you at, gremlin?

[Because oof he isn’t sure that he wants to have this conversation over the network. Honestly, he’d fall down a flight of stairs if he had to.]

Caelan took a deep breath, then another, and then another for good measure... He wasn’t going to get mad. The fountain wasn’t sentient; it didn’t just pop out of nowhere and trip him. It was his damned eyes’ fault and the fault of a demonic bear, which he certainly hoped was dead by now because he wasn’t sure he liked the idea of having to repeat the event of his death.

Then there was the sound of a familiar voice as someone stopped to stand next to the fountain. Caelan had liked Yuki, and probably would have been happier to see him if he weren’t freshly resurrected from being torn apart and now apparently blind. “I’m dandy, could dance a bloody jig.” He responded, as his head rolled to one side and seemed to stare at Yuki, or at his arm apparently. After all, he wasn’t entirely sure precisely which way to look beyond the general sound.

“Just tripped in is all, it’s Yuki... right?” He added just to be certain, in case his ears were messed up too.

Because that’d be just his luck today.

M'outside, just skatin' a bit..

[ Short, quiet answers are going to be the go-to here while she tries to hide the fact that she not getting upset, you're getting upset, shut up. ]

..Are you upstairs?

Are you...?

[Awkward... This was very awkward... Of course she was outside skating, that’s usually where she’d be if she wasn’t getting into mischief.

He frowned a little. That quiet tone wasn’t really hiding the fact that she was upset, so much as shining a bright light on the fact.]

I’m upstairs, yeah. You want to come up?

[Please do, otherwise he really will try to get to the square himself.]

[ It's weird - she should've been happy! Fuckin' relieved! Caelan was back, that's what mattered!!

Only, that isn't what she was feeling - she did feel it of course, somewhere in her brain, but relief wasn't what was making her feel all choked up and hot and kinda panicky-but-not-quite. She didn't even get a full answer out for him, she just kinda...made a sound of acknowledgement before she hung up on him, and started wrestling her skates off so she could get upstairs quicker.

Somewhere vaguely near Caelan's door they're dropped unceremoniously in favour of her throwing the door open, not having to look far before she found him.

It's at that point Caelan should have gotten a big hug, where she should tell him she missed him and that she's glad he's back.

Only, that wasn't what occurred. She just looked at him for a minute, pretty unabashedly crying and certainly wanting to hug him, but instead manifesting all the feelings violently bubbling up by running up to him and giving him a hard shove. And then another, smaller and pettier almost. The more she hit and pushed him, the less force there was behind them. Because she was angry and she was sad, yes.

But she was also so tired of feeling those things. ]

You fuckin'-!! You died!! I didn't know you fuckin' died, I didn't know where you were, you just disappeared you fuckin' asshole, you stupid!! jerk!

[ After apparently tiring of that too, only then did she finally fling her arms around him, little fingers curling into the back of his stupid fancy shirt. ]

[Caelan wasn’t entirely surprised when she hung up on him, but he was rather concerned about why she had. Holly had been so quiet. He was used to hearing her ramble on without pause for breath half the time, and the only time he could remember her sounding like that was one of the more recent evenings in the pillow for—

Oh... Right... Not so recent, now that he thought about it.

It had been weeks.

A short while later he heard the familiar sound of her skates being tossed to the floor by the door, his head swivelling in that direction instinctively. It was still so quiet. Why wasn’t she talking? Why wasn’t she yelling at him or rambling?

Then he felt a hard shove that almost knocked him over (Holly, you’re a strong one, kiddo), a hand coming out to catch him on the cushion next to him. Caelan supposed he should have seen that one coming (hahaha...), but he was more ready when the second came, and the third, and so on. They gradually wore down to just little nudges and he let out a long breath.

She was upset; she was upset because he’d died— Oh... Now that she was yelling; he realized part of why that was. Had... had no one realized he’d died? Had the bear left anything behind? He could have sworn Nida said the first victim’s body was left behind... Maybe not.

Oh... No, we don’t want to think about that right now.

He supposed he needed to say something. The selkie just wasn’t sure what to say, all things considered. He’d honestly been trying so damn hard to be careful in all this. The bear had been so much more than he anticipated...

You were warned, idiot.

But then he was being hugged and his thoughts were derailed, and all he could do was wrap Holly in a hug back. A snug, comforting gesture as he tried to say something.]

I’m sorry, Gremlin. I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize no one knew. I certainly didn’t mean to let it happen, I promise you that.

You died? [ There are so many questions that she wants to ask here, but she's most focused on the complications. ]

I can help you out. Would help to have something of yours though.

"In your way, my friend?" the guard asks, concerned. ANd he sees the eyes. Oh no.

He reaches out and then doesn't touch. Because that could be worse.

"Caelan, can you see me?"

Yeah, I don’t recommend it.

[Understatement...? Yes.

Colour him intrigued though, he definitely like the sounds of that offer.]

Something of mine? I can probably give you something, yeah. You use tracking spells or?

I shall attempt to find them. I will take my hammer. It will assist me in questioning people to see if they have seen it.

“Yeah, someone should have a word with it about that. Dangerous, going around tripping people into them.” He responded in a vaguely sarcastic tone, wringing his hair out a bit.

The question gets a short, frustrated sound out of him. “No, I can’t.” He gestured to his eyes. “But you sound like you’re looking fetching as ever, if that’s why your asking.”

Stop. Making. Jokes.

[What, was she going to go around threatening people to get his stuff back?

Not that he’d complain, if it got the job done.]

[ She pauses. Well, he's thrown magic out there pretty casually, so maybe he won't react too weirdly to a little elaboration. ]

Scent. I have better than average senses.

Oh, I’m grand, Shalimar. Nothing like being mauled to death by a bear. You’d swear I ate its porridge or something.

[He’s sarcastic because that’s easier than admitting that he’s not doing great in the brain-space. He’d almost died a few times in his life, and this was definitely a new one. Huffing a little, he continued.]

But yeah, other than the eyes I’m good. Nothing a visit to the tavern wouldn’t fix.

[A nice... long trip.

That was a different response than what he'd expected and Yuki pulled back a little. Was Caelan angry with him or something for not coming around? But he nodded as he was correctly guessing who he was talking to. "Yes..let me see if I can help you up." He held out his hand and it was weird..the other didn't seem to be catching on right away.

But he kept his hand out to the other and smiled. "I've been meaning to come see you and Miss Yuna at the Gullwings office. But I'll walk there with you if you're headed in that direction."

A thought.

"You..don't have your phone on you do you?" It'd probably be deader than a doornail at this rate.
