forgotten realms (ou): drizzt do'urden

[The video call comes around twilight, and the phone seems to be propped against a rock or something. Drizzt is nearby, a low fire crackling in a shallow fire pit surrounded by rocks. Saddled up against the rocks is a small pot and steam can be seen rising from it.

More interesting is what Drizzt is doing as the feed starts. Perched on his gloved hand is a clearly adolescent Great Horned Owl. It's flight feathers are only just beginning to grow in, and Drizzt is feeding it strips of flesh from a rabbit carcass nearby.]

The wildlife here is not unlike my home. This one's parents were taken by predators before he was ready to feed himself, but such is the way of nature.

[There's no hint of sadness in his voice, but rather awe. Nature, is, in fact, a wondrous thing, even when seeing the darker side.]

I have a home in mind for this one, as he is approaching that age where training is necessary and while I am able to feed, I am no birder.

[He smiles fondly at the fledgling has he eagerly swallows the meat he's being given.]

Have any others here had success in rearing animals native to this place? I know of animals coming with arrivals, but I have not heard of successes with the locals.

I don’t think I’ve seen one of that age before. Its feathers have such a puffy, fluffy quality to them right now. [ How good of Drizzt to take care of it for now. ] I admit I have considered the idea after a few trips to the shore and marveling at the creatures found there.

His flight feathers have only just begun to grow, but her perches well.

[He would care for any lost youngling of the forest as readily as he would a sentient child.]

I admit a lack of familiarity with sea creatures. What have you seen?

Oh? I imagine that is a good sign, indeed. He certainly seems to appreciate the morsels you’re sharing well.

[ He commented with a smile. This was truly a rare sight to see. The teen was more than a little curious. ]

Ah, well, I’ve seen a few things. I admit I’ve been a bit drawn to sea creatures. I had brought home lobsters back in my own world recently. I’ve seen similar things here, of course, and the smaller crustaceans found in tidepools were a wonder. Then there are the land sharks I ran into with some friends are fascinating.

He has the appetite of the young and eager. [His tone is fond.]

I saw the sharks which swim on land; they are truly a wonder! I believe I've heard of lobsters, but I've never seen one.

They are! I have never seen the like of them before, and I have met someone who apparently has ridden them! [ He really wants to make art of such an interesting sight. ]

Never? That is a pity, I must say. Hm… allow me to assist.

[ The man is promptly getting several attachments in his next text of the various sketches Yusuke has done of lobsters so he can see them! ]

As you can see, they are quite unique creatures!

Ridden the land sharks? [That must have been a marvel to behold.]

What curious creatures! Those claws look like to take a finger if one isn't careful.

Yes, I have not seen it myself yet… But I imagine it’s quite the sight!

[ He was still trying to decide on the terms Illyana had posed, having taken her more seriously than he should have. ]

They do have quite a pinch if one isn’t careful, but when handled carefully and keeping your fingers away from the claws, they are not terribly difficult to pick up.

Any would one handle then? Are they pets? A food source?

They are not commonly kept as pets; I suppose… More often than not, they’re caught for food. They’re quite delicious, I admit.

[ But his are friends, not food! ]

But they do make rather quiet but interesting company, in my experience.

I should hope so. They look damned difficult to crack otherwise.

[There are much more convenient things to eat.]

What sort of company do they keep?

That does seem to depend on the kind of lobster from my readings. Some are prone to hunt other fish and creatures nearby, or even each other, if not fed regularly. Then there are other kinds of lobsters that form relationships with other sea creatures, like starfish, for protection.

Then they are not dissimilar to creatures of the land, but I meant more what sort of company have they provided as pets?

Oh! Goodness, my apologies. [ He feels silly for mixing that up. ] They are quiet companions, really. They aren’t as hm… interactive as, say, dogs or cats, but I rather like to watch them wander in the tank.

[He frowns before responding. Creatures in tanks. It seems cruel.]

And they enjoy this fate?

Well, I can’t imagine they’d like it if they were in something small like a fishbowl. [ The bucket hadn’t remained long once he’d done some reading and harassed someone to help... ] But with enough space and things that mimic their natural environment, marine creatures like lobsters and creatures can be quite comfortable.

Comfortable and fulfilled are not the same things.

[People keeping marine animals in tanks and the like was not unknown to him, but it had always seemed cruel, no different from a person never being allowed to leave their home.]

It is a good thing you have done. We are also a part of nature. In my world...it seems this is sadly being forgotten by the day. There is all taking with no giving back.

No, and I more believe Deities embody ideals rather than...actual bodies.

[ah...this is a concept that dae's never heard before. and yet it makes more sense to him this way.]

The Ruinwood? I've never heard of such a place.

It was my home, a place of goodness. I love it more than my own self.

[He has only recently learned that feeling, and only partially.]

Tell me of your home?

Once, it was twisted and despised - misunderstood more than anything. It is not the ugly place others believed it to be, but a peaceful one. Flowers bloom there, and every Spring brings the newborns. The water is clean and sweet, and her dirt will yield anything that you plant, if only you give it the proper attention.

What was it, then, that gave it such a reputation?

[ Ivy has only the hint of a smile on her face. Just the hint. ] I didn't think you'd actually be able to find one.

I was fortunate enough to happen upon him, abandoned in his nest after his parents were taken. He is intelligent and needs a more skilled hand than mine.

Lucky. You sure he doesn't already like you? They can bond pretty intensely and they're usually loyal.

I believe he desires more than to be a pet.

I'd be happy to treat him like a companion, it's how I treated my owls back home. Partners in a hunt.

You are more predator than I and will prove a more earnest tutor.

I'm not entirely sure if that's a compliment or not. When should I come to you to get him?

[He rolls one shoulder in a slight shrug.]

Your time table is more restricted than mine. I could meet you at the hunting lodge whenever you're free.

Then I'll take it as one. [ So far he'd seemed nothing short of earnest and honest. ]

Is it? I can close up my own shop whenever I want. But I'll come by in a few hours.

[Not all would take being compared to a predator as a compliment, but it was important to Drizzt, who knew the wilds better than most, and knew that those who survived were those who were strong and opportunistic.]

Then I look forward to seeing you.

[ A few hours later she shows up, a tight black sleek leather jacket wrapped tightly around her as she approaches him. ]

I try to be as punctual as I can.

[Drizzt awaits near the fire, along with his young owlet charge and smiles when she approaches. The fire has burned down low, but the warmth is still welcome in the chill of the night air.]

In this, there was no needed effort, but welcome all the same. It is good to see you, my friend.

[ She smiles slightly at the sight of the owl. For most it might not be an exceptionally noticeable smile, but for Ivy it was a pretty big deal. ]

A few hours is a few hours. [ She's very specific. ] You too. He's beautiful.

You're not one prone to wasting time, are you?

[It was an admirable trait, albeit likely uncomfortable to maintain. Every day was a new adventure to the Drow, and he approached almost all journeys, even those with a meeting at their end, with the same wonder. He wasn't one prone to being 'on time'.]

He is, an intelligent. He would benefit from a more rigid hand, I think.

[That was to say Drizzt was well aware of his lack of structure and decorum. It has, after all, gotten him in trouble many times.]

Not usually. I like to plan things and stick to them. [ To a fault. When things didn't go according to a plan then things got...messy to say the least. Even if she'd been trying lately to curve that some. ]

Then he'll be in good hands.

And what of the times a plan has no chance of success?

[Planning was wonderful, but in the end, flexibility was the greater strength, at least in his experience. Nothing could be perfectly planned for.]

I'm pleased to hear it.

That's what backup plans are for.

[ And then you have a mental breakdown when those don't work either. ]

What about a name?

Have you ever tried simply allowing things to unfold as they will?

[He's very capable of planning, of course, but at times, he'd rather just go with the flow of things.]

I have not given him one.

A few times, recently, mostly with Rachel a friend from home. She only operates on letting things unfold and seeing what happens.

[ It had caused her a lot of anxiety and frustration. ]

I guess I'll have to think of something then.

She sounds like a friend of mine. He plans well, but is also prone to recklessness when his anger leads.

[He was, though, a grouchy old dwarf who had trouble admitting concern for others.]

He is resilient and wise if that helps.
