[The phone's camera turns on thanks to Shi knocking it off of the table and Yuki is seen stretching up on a step ladder to put a Tiger on top of the tree. After he fastens it on, he steps down and realizes the situation.]

Oh I didn't realize this was on.

[He paused a moment.]

Does everyone else have their tree up?

It’s December already, huh…? [ This is what happens when you deep-dive into a research project, Waver. You miss the passage of time. ] So I guess that means no on my part. Where did you get your decorations?

[ Waver was surprisingly rather fond of Christmas. He had a few traditions, usually spent with his sister, Gray, and a few students. ]

My significant other scouted around, and according to him there's a few shops here and there that are starting to sell them.

I see. Well, I’ll keep an eye open for them if I go out. Your tree looks nice, quite festive.

[Yuki half bowed to the camera.]

You’re welcome. It was nice to see and for the reminder of the season. Though I must say, your dog certainly has a way of putting you on the spot with recordings.

[ As he recalled, the last one had been an accidental recording as well. ]

[There was a sliver of a thought of Shigure there.]

[ Waver raises a brow slightly at that. He hasn’t known many dogs (and Svin does not count contrary to Flat’s name for him), but… ]

Do they? I’ve never known dogs to develop the habit of turning on electronics before.

[Yuki did his best to smile.]

[ Waver raised a brow at the attempted smile and the explanation. He’s pretty sure that’s still an odd thing for a dog, but then again? It’s not as though he’s ever had one to know. Mice and rats, sure. Almost a cat once… But not a dog. ]

I see… Clever thing for him to have taught, then. Though a bit tricky to deal with when you’re in the middle of something and he decides to do it.

[Yuki laughed lightly.]

His master has taught him some questionable things like he does. I'm almost constantly tripped by him when I'm trying to go up the stairs too.

Certainly sounds like he has.

[ Although a dog being underfoot around the stairs sounds a bit dangerous to him. ]

It must just be a part of a dog's nature.

[He's totally mentally thinking of Shigure at this point.]

They are said to be smart, though I haven’t much experience with them personally.

[He smiled.]

Sometimes they can be.

[Why would he have a tree up? Look, here's a video of Tommy wrapping warm blue and white patterned cloth around one of Speedy's climbing tracks.]

[Oh he'd heard the detective mention that, not that he knew what it meant.]

Well we didn't back home either. This is a new thing for me this year, besides going to the christmas party celebration last year.

Yeah. As it not Christian.

[Though his faith was a newer thing.]

But to each their own I guess

[He nodded along.]

This isn't something we do back home, but since I'm here with Jacob, we decided to do some of the traditions he's used to.

Ah. It's sorta a cultural thing derived from a dominant world religion with some religious appropriation sprinkled in where I'm from. And I'm of a different faith so it's not my thing.

By doing things with your bf makes sense. I did Christmas with Gar and David both.

[Yuki nodded with a smile, knowing only a bit of anything about that from the detective. And so he wondered if maybe he'd get to learn more.]

Did you get to do christmas here with them?

Here? Nah. Gar was gone too soon. And David has never been here. He's back home. And back home we'd probably not do anything special because we'd be worn out from family expectations.

Oh.

[Family expectations he understood with having to deal with the Sohma family and the private banquet reserved for the zodiac members.]

Did you cook a special meal or anything?

[Tommy wants to sigh, pretty seriously there. It’s hard to think about what would happen back home.]

I don’t. I’m not the greatest cook, Mom’s chicken Paprikash and home made pasta aside. Like, the Kaplans did a meal, and so did Grampneto sometimes. And I was invited. David went to try and reconnect with his parents last Christmas I was home, so that wasn’t a thing. And Gar was with me and Wanda that one year. It’s just weird, trying to pin down what is normal now.

[He hadn't ever heard of chicken Paprikash, but the home made pasta sounded good. But as he listened, Yuki wondered if maybe he'd struck a nerve somehow. It made him wonder if maybe Jacob knew how to make that dish, because Tommy mentioned the dish. So it had to be important right? Even if he knew nothing of the Jewish customs, food was still a thing.]

So you have no plans for this year since you're here?

[There was a point to this question.]

Nope. None. Gotta take care of my kiddos, so there's upgrades to coats and shoes, but that's about it.

[That had him smile.]

Somehow I forgot that you do such a nice thing.

[Oh come on, he's not THAT nice.]

Nah, not nice. Just making sure the kids will be good to work.

[Yuki wasn't fooled, but he wasn't going to debate it.]

They have enough warm clothes and things, right?

Yeah, I think so? I try and pay them enough for it. And give them 'bonuses' at this time of the year in shoes and gloves and coats.

[A thought.]

Do you feed them as well?

I keep snacks and stuff at the stand. Tell them it's because I get hungry so much.

[He nodded.]

Do they eat regular meals with you too? Or do they just snack?

Snack. It's harder to justify full meals around there.

[He's got his own little family and he's doing his best.]

[He nodded.]

Well I'm glad to hear that you and your kids are eating at least. I don't want to keep you from them.

You're not. I'm always there when they need me.
