So this is the academy? - The Magic Academy - OTA

Lord El-Melloi II (or Waver Velvet to some) had finally made his way to the academy for a look around. He’d gathered up a lot of base materials needed for demonstrations and projects that he tended to use as introductions to magic. It sounded like there might at least a few people who were new to these things, and he wasn’t unused to that. Aside from the 'problem students' he attracted at the Clock Tower? His department tended to be where the new, younger mage families gravitated, given he didn’t view them the way that other old-fashioned departments did.

And, recalling one Flat Escardos, sometimes even the experienced student did silly things or forgot basic knowledge.

So the tall mage had a rather bulky bag hanging over his shoulder as he strode through the halls with purpose. Well… Weary purpose, he wasn’t suited for carrying heavy things long distance, really. So the trek to the Academy and through its halls was a bit taxing on the man.

His keen olive green eyes had begun to take in the building, looking around and vaguely wondering what the place had been like before the disaster… Supposedly this was an important fixture at one point in time, if the townsfolk and what those he’d met since arriving had said was to be believed. Right now, he could at least appreciate the work that had been done to start to clean the place up already and see the potential in it.

Waver supposed he could have asked Illyana to show him around, but he didn’t doubt he’d bump into her or someone else at some point. For now, he just wanted to wander and get a feel for the academy on his own, ducking his head into doorways to get a look at the various rooms as he searched for where the lecture halls might be. He hoped to find a room that was suitable for a few students with room to grow, and a place to store the supplies he’d gathered.

And just as he thought he would, eventually he opened a door and stumbled across a person who happened to be around. “Pardon my intrusion.” He commented politely in a lightly British accent, torn between closing the door again and actually making an attempt at being social. The latter winning out, if only because he should probably get to know the people who might be here regularly. “I was just getting a look around.” He added with a nod in greeting.

Lost Among The Shelves - The Historium - OTA

While Waver Velvet had grown and changed quite a bit over the course of nearly ten years… Some things would never change. He had a particular thirst for knowledge and the written word that often had to be ignored in favour of his recent responsibilities in life. Reserved for small lengths of time during quiet afternoons, post-lectures or evenings in after a case solved.

Here, however, the young Lord had very few responsibilities outside those he had begun to take upon himself. He was more of a free agent here than he had been used to more recently, but he was also in desperate need of a distraction from thoughts of the life he needed to get back to and what he’d left behind that needed his attention…

So the Historium was becoming a favoured haunt once he found his way to it. The tall shelves and haphazard organization were a challenge, but one he was more familiar with as he picked at books and tomes at random to slip on top of a pile in his arms. Today, he was wearing something less rumpled than the clothing he’d had when he arrived. A dark brown coat with an oxblood red scarf draped over the lapels and a black dress shirt and pants, with a grey cravat in place of a tie.

For someone with very low physical abilities and muscle, he was seen to gather rather impressive piles as he wandered. Ignoring the strain on his arms and the almost teetering height of them as he carried his selections back to set on an empty table he’d chosen. Comfortable to sit at and hunch over the pages, slender fingers tracing over the words as he devoured each book.

Then it was back for another wander, finding his next targets… One could ask if he had a particular area of interest, but really he seemed to be pulling from one thing to another rather quickly. Even sliding in some novels here and there, detective novels being his preference, and stories about knights or kings and their quests or battles following close behind.

Eventually, the man was quite diminished by the surrounding piles, looking less like the tall, imposing professor that he was and more like the small, naïve young man he used to be. More Waver than El-Melloi II. It was going to be a pain to put everything back whenever he did decide to leave, but that wouldn’t be anytime soon. He wasn’t keen to return to the Red Building, and he was quite comfortable to enjoy this rare indulgence.

It’s run down. It looks like it’s going to collapse. It’s perfect. - Harbor District - OTA

Perhaps someone who went by a title such as he did should be wandering the noble district for a nice space to set up his mage workshop. Or even one of the nicer parts of the market… but that really wasn’t who he was. He was a temporary Lord meant to keep the seat warm for someone else once they were old enough to take their rightful place at the head of the El-Melloi family. It had just been slightly amusing, perhaps, for Reines to see the man who caused Kayneth so much trouble filling the role. Especially given he was a third generation third rate, to have him sitting at the table with the likes of the other Lords was somewhat hilarious.

He had refused to live at the family estate, between wanting to maintain some semblance of freedom and the idea of living in the same house that Kayneth once had, gave him indigestion. Plus… Being easy access for Reine’s teasing would probably age him faster. He had begun to care for his adoptive younger sister, but she still grated on his nerves at times.

Ruffling his feathers was her favourite sport, after all.

His preferences to avoid reminders of some places or people aside, there was something to be said for an uninviting space when you were more or less a social hermit by nature. Harry Dresden had warned him that the harbor district was dangerous, yes, but that also meant he wouldn’t be as likely to be pestered by locals for things that most tended to assume mages were good for. He could conduct magical experiments and research in peace, with only a bounded field to ward off the more brave and a dilapidated appearance to keep the faint of heart from approaching.

For those few anomalies in between...? Well, in exchange for peace and security he might consider mixing some compounds and potions for payment or assisting with some light magecraft if needed. As long as their request wasn't too much of a pain in his ass or above his skill level.

He had finally happened upon an old stonework building that might have been a small tavern at one time by the looks of the faded sign hanging on by one link and swinging faintly in the breeze coming in from the docks. The bricks were crumbling in places, and there was some stubborn plant life splitting the walls in other places as it fought to keep a hold. The windows were caked with dust and dirt, which unfortunately kept him from seeing the inside without going in… But even that was a selling feature. If he couldn’t see in, then no one else could. “Perfect…” He mumbled, nodding his head slightly as he moved to the door, tilting his head as he found the doorknob was stuck, rusted shut.

Well, that wasn’t too much of a problem. Breaking in would be easy enough with a little patience... He’d have to replace the doorknob, anyway. Then he frowned lightly. Glancing over his shoulder, he offered a tired sigh. “If you’re looking to rob me, you should know I have very little of value on me at the moment.”

Academy

England had taken the advice he'd received to heart. It had been quite the humbling experience to realize that he needed something to do before he drove himself crazy. He'd even checked out the chocobo ranch because he'd never seen such a creature before and had spent somewhere around an hour learning a great deal about them from one of the chocobo farm hands.

He was used to being needed and called on or doing important things and while that almost seemed fun to have free time on his hands, in the end it wore him down. Cooking was of no help either because it didn't bring him any joy. So Arthur had gone out and wandered the woods. And that was when he heard of the Academy. Since he too had magic and he always had wondered what it would be like to be an actual teacher, he practically jumped on the opportunity.

His classes started in a few days, so England was at the Academy, feeling excited at the prospect of teaching. He had so many ideas and the first thing he'd done was straighten up the classroom. Far be it from him to teach in a dirty environment. So as he was finishing up, he heard his door open.

Green eyes blinked almost disbelievingly at the accent, but he made no comment about it for the moment. He smiled and nodded at the stranger. "By all means, please do come in."
akindofmagic: (Are you sure about that?)

Arthur was really happy to hear the accent and had questions but those could come later. Right now if this man was indeed one of the other teachers, it would be best to get along with him. As long as they didn't have irritating presences such as America had, it would work well.

And this would give him something to do and pass on should he find himself having gone home unexpectedly one day. He himself would never have children to pass on the knowledge that he had gained and America never displayed any talent for the art nor had Sealand. But this was a chance to dare to put passion and talent into something he'd never given himself permission to dream about.

The blonde head shook. "I am not sure if they've gotten around to putting my name out there as I just got accepted yesterday. But in either case, I'm Arthur Kirkland, and it's a pleasure to meet you."
akindofmagic: (Well hello there)

England tucked the 'lord' title for the moment since he wasn't sure what the man was lord of. And as he continued to keep himself busy, he searched his memory and he couldn't recall meeting this man back home. So perhaps the man's accent while similar wasn't ringing any bells in his own memory.

So it had to be a case of the man being a lord elsewhere. And it didn't faze him at all. Green eyes looked up at the other as he paused from cleaning off a desk. Wherever this place had been, it hadn't seen use in quite some time. There was so much more cleaning to be done, so Arthur figured he'd be here for awhile. But it wasn't as if he had somewhere else to be either.

"I had toured on my own yesterday, so I'm not far ahead of you." England replied, mentally working on more of the cleaning. But he smiled and stood for a moment. He put his washcloth back into the hot water filled with soap and he smiled with a gesture of his blonde head to the next room over. "There are plenty of classrooms open, but unfortunately they all seemed to be as dusty and dirty as this one. So there's quite a good selection left."
akindofmagic: (Are you quite alright?)

England continued to work and had made quite a lot of progress. The first thing he'd done was swept and mopped. Then his desk and chair were cleaned, the blackboard was done, and now here he was working on the student desks. About half of those were done, and he had yet to get to the windows and door. But it helped to keep him and his mind busy and that was the point of this cleaning exercise.

Arthur looked up with a smile, and stood to admire how clean he'd gotten this new student desk. He sighed and tossed the cloth back into the bucket. "The entire place needs a good scrub. But I've been told others will be here to do so next week. I however decided to get a jump on it." And that meant cleaning it to his standards not someone else's.

There was another smile. "I've been here for a few hours at least. I'm not yet halfway done, but my students deserve a clean place to learn and somewhere they don't have to be so concerned about coming down ill from attending class."
akindofmagic: (And your explanation is?)

"I've been half expecting something to take a leap out of somewhere at me." England replied with a nod. Thankfully he didn't believe for one moment that Russia was here, so if he had to summon something he was ninety nine percent sure that nation wasn't going to show his face. Germany wasn't here either to threaten or scare him so that was a plus as well in his book.

Looking at his companion, there was a small sigh and a slight smile. "Yes, I knew of one boy who never quite outgrew his ability to not focus." Of course he was referring to America, but he didn't want to let in on that. If the nation showed up by some odd chance, and this man indeed met him, he would know who England was referring to within moments no doubt.

Arthur was aware enough that he would be the same and get attached to his students and he'd deny it with his dying breath. But he wouldn't let any of them get as close as America had. And that was probably the reason he'd treated Peter so badly because he had been afraid to deal with the heartbreak all over again. Fortunately Sweden had bought him on Ebay and was raising him along with Finland.

Watching the other as he set his things down, England nodded. "If you need a rest, you're welcome to have a seat."

Arthur laughed at the comment regarding the blessing. The man was correct and for whatever reason England was still on his guard. However that laughter stopped once he heard the tale about Illyana mentioning a man to check on the safety of the place. "Well danger and magic do go hand in hand." That much was agreeable at least.

He smiled at the quesstion and shook his head. "I've yet to have a full class, but I do suppose that is to be expected." America's little cherub face flashed in his mind which turned into a sigh at himself. But when the man sat down, England did notice the slight smile which disappeared as quickly as it had shown.

That put a little spring in his step, to know that even here in a strange world he still possessed the ability to make someone smile. That was worth quite a bit in his eyes. He finished the desk he was working on, and then went outside of the room to go dispose of it and thoroughly wash his hands.

When Arthur came back, he put the new bucket of hot soapy water down. "Can I interest you in a cup of tea? I've brought some along with some blueberry scones and cream that I don't mind sharing."

Fortunately he didn't make them.
akindofmagic: (Did you need something?)

England smiled with a nod and decided against regaling this man with war tales. Having been so long lived he had plenty of them and too many to count. This wasn't about who had a better war story, this was about making sure the man had rest and tea.

"Yes, although I do hope to have a full class, although I am wondering if there is a test or anything of that sort to make sure whoever walks in the door knows what they're in for." This was him worrying slightly of course because he wasn't sure a non magical person would be ready for it, even if they should more than be fully aware of the nature of their learning simply by attending.

Arthur gave a smile as he walked back out of the room and had thoroughly washed his hands again. He had Earl Grey tea and was quick to make sure he gave his company a good helping of the blueberry scones and clotted cream too. After he set those down, he reached into his bag and produced blueberry jam and set that near the scones with a clean spoon and a few fresh napkins.

The gratitude was refreshing. "You're quite welcome, do enjoy."
akindofmagic: (Relaxing with tea)

Arthur nodded at the idea of open lectures. That wasn't something he'd thought about doing once or twice a month as he'd thought to have an open discussion at the beginning since the tests didn't seem to be a thing here. But it was a good idea, and maybe opening it up to how comfortable the students actually were. He just had a feeling that some might not be there because they wanted to be.

He'd just have to wait and see. So he busied himself with his own small stash of scones and tea and sat down in a chair. This was a good break and it would give him the energy he would need to finish cleaning the rest of the room.

"Why thank you." Arthur replied, with a smile on his face as he got to the business of enjoying his own cup of tea. And he didn't even want to know what a slap dash cup was because that was something he would never be interested in.

"Tea will be something I will always have in my classroom."

Arthur nodded. "Considering classes might run late or a student needs extra lessons or instruction." This was him guessing of course, but there was a part of him that had always wanted to be a teacher. He could regale his students with plenty of lessons learned from the school of hard knocks and with a life as long lived as his, he definitely had made plenty of mistakes. Hopefully they would listen and not learn the hard way as he had.

These plans made him think that he might need to stash more than simply tea unless there happened to be electricity in the building which he thought there might be. And if that was the case, perhaps he would find a small refrigerator or twenty throughout the building due to how big it was.

If not, he could always bring things for the day or find a small refrigerator to purchase.

"Private classes over class learning.." Arthur mused before biting into one of the scones. As he enjoyed the small snack, his mind went running over someone that might enjoy something like that. Not that he knew of anyone himself of course, but he would have to be on call so to speak at times and since e didn't have much else going on, this would help alleviate his loneliness.

Not that he'd ever admit to it, but he's used to having so many people needing him for any number of things. Or people irritating him by a simple phone call or a visit. Here he has none of that. So throwing himself into work would be perfect in his opinion.

Heck, he even planned on spending time at the local tavern to do classwork just so he didn't have to go home.
akindofmagic: (Just a little bit shy)

[personal profile] akindofmagic 2022-10-10 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Right, not everyone learns the same way as someone else." So he could definitely understand how that would come up.

England figured that he might get a student or two that might need more lessons than the ones in class due to the complexity of spell work. And then of course theory might prove to be a thing. America would probably be in the remedial magic classes, not that the other nation ever showed any interest in the subject.

Once his fellow professor grabbed his bag, Arthur stood. Break time was over he supposed, but it was pleasant enough because it had given him a bit of rest. "You're quite welcome, and I hope you find a suitable classroom." And that shouldn't be hard given the selection available.

He smiled, enjoying the pleasantness he was unexpectedly on the receiving end of. "I will do so should I have any concerns and I thank you for the company and offer of assistance."
