001 » You Never Call me on My Tell Phone

[Thomas has been keeping a fairly low profile and away from most people, going out at night to get a better feel for things around here, but after the speech in the square and the week-long party, he's decided maybe he should get to know the others here, since apparently some crazy gods brought them here to rebuild the place.

Besides, eventually the Hunger that makes up half of his soul is going to demand to be fed, and while he can subsist on nearly nothing for quite a while it is nearly nothing, not nothing at all. Still, when he starts the transmission, it's pretty tame and not at all suspicious.
]

You know, these phones really clash with the decor. Do they just throw things into a hat and see what they pull out this week? How many of you are familiar with these things?

[Because knowing the sorts of people he's trapped here with is important.]

[Well there’s a new voice that he hadn’t heard before. Caelan still didn’t like these devices, but he was bored... so why not? Thomas would hear a melodic voice, light accent decidedly Irish in origin for anyone who knew of the place.]

They were wearable accessories with a crystal set in them, which definitely fit this world’s aesthetic before the Aspects got it in their heads to change it up.

And that’d be no, I’m in the party that isn’t familiar with these things.

I wouldn’t say a big party, not based on the people I’ve met since arriving. There seems to be a decent enough amount who knew what these phone things were about when the crystals were switched out.

[Humming a little, he continued.]

Which party are you in, then?

[This one's definitely in the learning technology school. He has a basic sort of understanding but the tech is actually left up to the people who can wield it with proficiency, like Nat and Shuri and of course people like Tony.]

If they're throwing things into a hat, they might want to consider a hat big enough to send us all home. I'm sure we've all got better things to do.

[Like fight for the fate of the Universe and other 'small' scale things like that.]

It's been a few decades but I think I remember how flip-phones work.

[It hasn't been that long but Jake is surmising.]

[A sweet honey warm voice replies back to Thomas.]

We were first given crystals. We could only use them to speak. However, one night they were turned into phones with the ability to text as well.

I don't know what it is but... [Her voice trails off and softens.] It is affected by us, our presence here.

You said your name was Thomas? I'm Syeira.

[Had he said that? She isn't sure.]
brotherofagod: (Yeah?)

Yeah.

I don't know about you but the 2000's weren't very kind to me. Not that I could afford a flip phone back then. I was ten.

It's odd. Don't you think?

[She nods and doesn't realize that he can't see her.]

What are you used too?

[personal profile] stickyflippers 2020-08-25 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They were easier to carry around as crystals, though they also couldn’t be used for private conversations so the enchantment was a bit flawed that way.

[Which he admits is probably one of the few points in favour of the phone.]

[Thomas was right and Steve knew it, but he still sighed.]

That's true. But to answer your question, we have phones like this back home.

[Technically he's way before their time, but that's not important right now.]

[ The voice that Thomas gets in reply is unmistakably from New York and definitely that of a child, though her choice in language is decidedly...not. Generally speaking, anyway. ]

Don't even get me started - they started us out these dumb lil crystal thingies and then upgrade us to freakin' 2000's. Could at least give us somethin' with apps and shit.

I don't know your voice - we met before? When'd you get here?

Deep questions today. [ She said with a light chuckle. ] I'm familiar with things similar to it. More advanced but similar enough.

Really? I've never had an I-phone before but that was only because it was expensive.

We didn't have a lot of money.

[No pockets if you’re a seal, Thomas. Not that he would have a way of knowing that... So he hummed a little,]

Yeah, I would say that it’s definitely a vote in their favour. Just a bit vexing that the aspects couldn’t have worked out a design that utilizes the best of both.

I'm surprised given the state of the world that we even have phones.

[This from a 100 year old man but one who felt young when he looked around at the technology of the time period.]
