17th - House of Solace Orphanage

A small figure stood outside of the Orphanage with a steady frown pointed at the large building. She understood what it meant but denial crept through her little body like a snake. She wasn't an orphan. Her mother and father were alive but it didn't matter in this kingdom because her family wasn't here with her. She was alone and it was something that she wasn't able to get used to. It'd been two days since she'd first arrived and her loneliness only grew with each passing hour.

The nights were the worst. She didn't want to return to the orphanage where she was forced to try and sleep while unsettling thoughts plagued her. Perhaps she's cursed like her mother. She'd been told that this world wasn't a curse but what else could it be called.

Luna sighed softly before turning away from the Orphanage and walking down the street. When she grew hungry she'd have to return but for now, she was going to avoid the daunting building. Her shoes were a little too big, borrowed from Mono, and every few steps she tripped before regaining her footing once more.

She had no idea where to go or what to do.

20th - Nightime Storm

The nights were the worst and the sudden storm made it unbearable. Luna had hidden under her bed with a blanket over her head for the first hour but she could still hear the rumble and see the bright flashes of light through the nearby window. She cried silently making her throat ache for the voice that she'd lost. She wanted to call someone to come save her but no one could hear her cries.

She thought of her twin brother and knew that he'd have been there with her, holding her to protect her from the angry god that cried out for justice. Sole wasn't with her. It was time for her to be brave.

Luna gathered her blanket and wandered out into the rain. It was difficult to see but she'd been to Mono's home when he'd given her a pair of shoes and she was positive that she knew the way. The wind battered at her tiny form and if she'd been any taller then she would have blown away but she stood strong with her tiny fingers clinging desperately to the blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

Her steps stumbled to a stop when she spotted a figure in the distance. She couldn't make out what it was but stopped, falling to the ground as fear froze her tiny limbs.

23rd - Midday Songs

Her time in the city had been stressful and not without incident but there were calm moments too. In between the hours she found herself looking up at the sky with a thoughtful gaze. Was the storm truly over or was this a lull. Luna had never liked stormy weather and the castle she'd once lived in did nothing to define the noise. It was for this reason that she'd first begun to learn how to play the harp.

The small lyre that she'd been given from Llyewelln sat on her tiny legs as she carefully plucked the cords. The notes were a little different but the strings were the same.

Luna sat on a random street corner and began to gently pluck the lullaby that her mother used to sing to her. It wasn't overly complicated and even when she fumbled she was able to recover and recall the remainder of the song. It was far from perfect and she played one of the sets twice having forgotten what had come next but it was a lovely song. If it wasn't for the frown and slow draw of her fingers it might have sounded happy.

No parents. That's... Horrible.

"I'm an orphan too," he says, his voice soft. but he reaches into his pouch at his side and takes out his shopping list. Then flips it over to the blank side and takes out a pencil and offers it to her.

The young princess wanted to respond, to explain, but how could she? Even if she could speak the words jumbled in her head as she tried to understand the full breadth of her situation.

She glanced up at Rhy and then took the offered paper and pencil. It didn't take a terribly long time but within a few minutes, she had a neatly penned list of components that she needed to make the honey-sweet bread she'd learned to make from the chief's wife months before.

Luna hoped that the list wasn't too long. She didn't want to take too much of Rhys's money after earing a bit of her own.

There, that's useful.

"I'll take the list, but you keep the pencil and paper, okay? How can I find you when I have this all bought?"

Luna nodded her head happily and then began to write on the pad once again.

'I have a room at the orphanage.' She refused to call it home. It didn't feel like a home without her twin brother with her. After a moment's thought she wrote again and held up the paper as if to hide shyly behind it. 'My name is Luna. It's nice to meet you Sir Rhy.'

At the orphanage? Rhy... doesn't look happy about that. But he offers a small smile at the title she gives him. What?

"Oh my dear, I promise I'm not a knight of any renown at all. In fact... Do you want to hear a little secret?"

She could use a smile he thinks, and chances are she wouldn't believe it at all.

Luna's dark hazel eyes brighten at the promise of a secret. She steps closer and leans forward, expecting him to lower his voice to keep the secret between the two of them.

She will make sure not to tell anyone.

Rhy leans in to whisper in her ear.

“I’m not a knight, so don’t call me Sir. In truth, I’m a king.”

Little kids loved stories like that, so he didn’t think she’d believe that.

Her eyes widened and surprised mingled with panic as she nearly dropped her notebook. For the first time, her handwriting wasn't neat but scribbled and rushed.

'A good king?'

She held the paper in front of her face and as he read it, she began to write on the opposite side, this time taking a little longer to write a little more neatly than before.

When she was finished she flipped over the notepad to show the other side. 'My father is a king. He was going to eat us. The Queen said. You don't eat prince's and princess's do you?' The notebook wasn't a good hiding place but it made her more comfortable.

She didn't just believe him but worried that he might somehow know her father.

"I hope a good one..."

But his teasing words fail at the other note. And he looked angry as the words continued, as he read them. Furious and offended. But he didn't want her to se that. So he went down to his knees before her.

"No, never like that. Kings, good kings, sacrifice themselves for their people. They never want to see them hurt. And princes and princesses are there because they will be the next kings and Queens. I would never hurt one of my people."

Oh this poor child.

Hundreds of questions filled her tiny head but she focused her attention on one pointed fact. This was Pretzel's father too and he was a good dog.

A bad person couldn't fool a good dog.

She gathered her courage and peeked over the top of her writing pad, meeting Rhy's gaze. She nodded solemnly and slowly lowered the pad to her side. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears as she stepped forward and wrapped her small arms around Rhy's shoulders. Luna hadn't meant to bring up her father or the evil queen but hearing that he was a king... perhaps he could truly protect her.

Kings of different nations were even within the courts. Not even her father or the queen could carelessly get rid of her.

After gathering her thoughts she gently pulled away and once again wrote on the pad of paper for Rhy to read. 'Thank you.' She felt silly for the way she'd acted, it wasn't very lady like.

"Don't thank me, dear little Princess," he says, voice pitched low and soothing, like he did when Pretzel was worried. "I would never bring harm to you. Never."

And he didn't know what to do with that. This beautiful little child probably already had more noble a heart than he had at her age. Then again, he did remember wanting to forgive those who had kidnapped him.

"Sometimes people are mean to people of our station, because they think when we are little, we can be used against the people who love us. Or they can gain power from us. And it's not true. In the end, we're people too, just as scared as anyone else."

Luna sniffles and nods as quickly as she can. He was a good person. She knew that. If only this world had been kind enough to bring her twin with her. Then maybe the current situation wouldn't have been so overwhelming.

'Sorry' She held up the notepad while rubbing her cheeks. She hadn't meant to get emotional.

'It was scary. I don't want them to find me here.' The world was unfair but she'd met so many wonderful people in this city and she wanted to believe that all of the people here were as wonderful as the handful she's met.

"Don't apologize. Emotions are something we're allowed to have. And,if you need, I can help you hide."

It's a lot to offer out of nowhere, but... The child is so scared.

The young princess nods her head to let him know that she understands. It's a weight off her chest though she still feels very close to tears. Perhaps it's best if she rests for the remainder of the day.

She begins to write again and then hands the pad over to Rhy to look. 'Will you walk me back to the orphanage?' She didn't want to go alone.

He still doesn't like the idea of her there, but Rhy offers a nod.

"It is my duty, and my honor, to escort you safely."

Luna doesn't like the idea of staying at the orphanage either but she had no where else to go. She at least had a room, a bed and a blanket that she could safely hide beneath when the outside world became too overwhelming to bear.

She smiled weakly up at Rhy before taking his hand and walking with him towards the Orphanage.
