Winter log
Who: Everyone!
What: Open Log
When: December
Where: The Hunter's Lodge
Warnings: N/A
Notes: This is a mingle log, so people are free to set up their own TLs under it. So tag in and tag around!
Snow has fallen outside and while it's not heavy it's set just enough down to gently cover the wooden benches and ground outside. The chairs have been removed but the lanterns are still out and lit (as well as the little lights that have been replaced with more festive ones) if people want to walk around outside and have private chats among the snow, the trees and the lighting.
Potluck - Food is all around. Got a story about how the food you brought is part of a long standing family tradition? So much the better! But Ignis for his part has been researching and working on bringing the foods he's heard about. So here you'll find an appetizer platter along with a cream cheese tree, turkey, ham, his version of the Crown City roast, stuffing balls, roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables, and of course a few different desserts.
So you can find him making sure the table is decked out in christmas colours and full of food. But as he sets the last appetizer tree down on the table, he nods. "Quite glad to see that you could make it."
Trim a tree A small group of freshly cut green trees are sitting in a corner with room to go around the back. Simple lights are already in place, but there are ornaments with hooks sitting in silent invitation to decorate the tree and gather around as well as different coloured garland too.
But there's plenty of supplies and being able to decorate a tree with Nida last year was all sorts of fun as it will be again this year. So the advisor is definitely happy that nature can come inside at least temporarily.
Ignis stands back and takes a look at the trees with a satisfied sort of nod. "I suppose after the holiday, I will see about replanting it outside." Turning to his guest, there's an easy smile. "It won't do to simply throw it away do you think?"
Gift exchange - Gifts aren't required, but people are free to do so. This can be as private or as public as wished! The royal strategist is busy arranging gifts under the tree, trying to make some sense as to how they should be grouped, so he's on his knees trying to keep the order straight. As soon as someone approaches, he acknowledges their presence with a smile. "Would you mind handing me that blue wrapped gift sitting on the chair right next to you?"
Wild card- Dancing? Snowball fights outside? Feel free to make up a thing here!

His eyebrow rose. "Really? Should I hide snacks so that you can find them throughout the holidays?" They might not be eatable snacks, unless he can find food that won't spoil, but he would be willing to add a bit of extra fun to Mono's holiday experiences.
A warm happy laugh rumbled through Jacob's chest. "Yeah. Anything. It used to be candles and ribbons. Which is not a good idea since there is a chance that the tree could be set on fire. Anything handmade. As long as it isn't too big. I think it'd be fine." He knew a lot of kids who liked to make ornaments, even if it wasn't something that he had been overly interested in while growing up.

Mono rather liked the sound of laughter, it was a nice sound… He listened with interest though to the description of what could be used for decorations, almost interrupting to ask why anyone use a candle that seemed like a fire hazard, but remaining silent when Jacob went on to say it himself. He had to smile a little, “I wonder what kinda stuff I could find to use… These are all really nice, but if anything could be an ornament… Maybe there’s something that would be fun to use that no one thought of yet.”

He also had a weakness for children, likely because his childhood had abruptly ended at the age of thirteen.
"I'll see what I can do. Give me two days and then you can go on the hunt. It'll be all over the city." He paused and then consider the area around the warehouses. "The safe areas of the city. So the shops, the housing area and the library." That was a big area but it'd give Jacob a chance to hide things without it causing issues to anyone else.
He finished placing his last ornament cookie with a nod of his head. "Why don't you look around here for something? I don't think anyone would mind if things suddenly appeared on the trees." This might end poorly but it sounded fun.

So he nodded finally as Jacob explained the idea, safe areas sounded smart… Adults here were very careful about that, which was alright most of the time… But when he thought he should be doing something it was less easily accepted by the child. But in the case of games or learning, it was best if everyone stayed safe and didn’t take unnecessary risks. “Okay! I’ll wait to look for stuff till you say you’re ready.”
Well, not strictly true. Mono was always exploring and poking around places when he was trying to learn things, but at least he wouldn’t be expecting any of these snacks Jacob talked about until he said so.
“I guess I could… I dunno if I can find anything nice or pretty like this stuff, but maybe there’s some stuff around here that makes sense.” Mono started looking around thoughtfully. He didn’t really spend a lot of time at the hunter’s lodge for reasons… So he wasn’t used to looking around it much.

He could see that backfiring really easily.
"Let's take a look." Jacob glanced around the party but didn't see much that wasn't already on the trees but it might be interesting to look around the lodge. He didn't spend a lot of time in this building. "Let's look together and see what we can find."
He gestured with a hand as if to silently let the lil Shade lead the way around the Lodge. He probably knew his way around better anyway.

It could backfire fairly easily… Sometimes Mono made rather odd decisions without realizing it might be the smart one, so without very specific instructions, it might lead to some social blunders on his part otherwise. He was learning, of course, but he was also used to breaking into places he wasn’t supposed to be. He just did it a little less since he hadn’t needed to…
Not that he hadn’t when he arrived. Most of the rooms in the grey building had been broken into at the time, since it had been completely empty when he got there. He didn’t break anything, of course… Probably… Or so it remained to be seen…
When Jacob gestured for him to lead the way, Mono looked around carefully as he tried to decide where to start. “I don’t really come here much… So I dunno where much stuff is here.” He had a bad experience at a hunting cabin in his world… So this entire ‘hunter’s lodge’ was a bit unsettling most of the time, but he still visited because he knew people who worked here. Though he still liked to reserve it for when there were festivities and more people, he liked to make it a little less uncomfortable. “I guess it just means we gotta look a little harder, right?” He commented, finally taking a few steps in a random direction.

Jacob grinned. "That's the spirit." He didn't know much about Mono but he liked the kid. He was eager and honest in a way that Jake wasn't used too. He wondered if he had been like this as a kid. He really couldn't remember.
"I'll stay with you. So let's go." Jake followed with his little shadow to make sure that they didn't get into trouble. "I haven't gotten a chance to explore the lodge. Let's stay away from any animal parts." Because that seemed a little messed up. "There are the decorations." It would be interesting to have flowers in the tree but it wasn't the time of year for that sort of thing.

Mono was glad for the company, as much as he didn’t mind being alone. Well… He minded, but he was also used to it most of the time. But here? Here, he liked the idea of having company to help him look for decorations. Plus, Jake seemed like a really neat guy. Even if the kid had been a little suspicious of him when he arrived, he was clearly safe to trust and genuine.
The comment about staying away from the animal parts was met with a very vigorous and firm nod. “Yeah, I… Don’t like that stuff. It’s weird.” And reminds him of things he’s already seen, in a way he doesn’t like. “So let’s try… Over this way!” He announced, marching off in the direction of what was probably the kitchen and dining area again. It seemed safe enough, and Jacob had just hung cookies on trees… So maybe there were other things they could find!
wrap up soon?
"I'm right behind you." Jacob didn't feel the need to chime in too much though he gave Mono the occasional affirmative nod. It was easy for him to be quiet and follow. It wasn't silent because of the party going on around them but it was comfortable.
He did make sure to clean up any mess that Mono made in the kitchen but it was otherwise a fruitful search. He grabbed a spatula and put that on one of the trees before their search was done.
Sure thing!
He found a few things himself, a cheese grater and some pretty tea cups that he thought might look pretty on the tree. He almost grabbed a ladle, but… Well, ladles were more of a weapon than a decoration, at least it had been last time he had one. So that got left behind. “I think we got some good stuff! Do you think they’ll look nice on the three?” He asked, perhaps hoping for some form of approval as they made their way back to the part of the lodge with trees.
sweetness
Jacob helped carry some of the items, despite how cute it would be to watch Mono's little arms try and balance everything. He let Mono hang most of what they found and handed him item after item until the tree was decorated. It looked like a mess but a nice mess and it's unique shimmer made him smile. Anything that reflected the light was the best.
"You did good lil shade."

Once they both had a tree well covered in assorted kitchenware, Mono stood back and looked at their handiwork. “Wow...” He beamed, liking how the light was reflected off of all the shiny surfaces. It made it seem even brighter!
Jacob’s praise made the kid stand up a little straighter, looking more pleased with himself as he gave the man a clumsy but genuine grin. “Really?? Thanks! I think we did well, though!” He added, since Jake had been a lot of help!
He decided, perhaps in that moment, that while Christmas was weird, it was definitely fun.
