Winter log

Who: Everyone!
What: Open Log
When: December
Where: The Hunter's Lodge
Warnings: N/A
Notes: This is a mingle log, so people are free to set up their own TLs under it. So tag in and tag around!

Snow has fallen outside and while it's not heavy it's set just enough down to gently cover the wooden benches and ground outside. The chairs have been removed but the lanterns are still out and lit (as well as the little lights that have been replaced with more festive ones) if people want to walk around outside and have private chats among the snow, the trees and the lighting.

Potluck - Food is all around. Got a story about how the food you brought is part of a long standing family tradition? So much the better! But Ignis for his part has been researching and working on bringing the foods he's heard about. So here you'll find an appetizer platter along with a cream cheese tree, turkey, ham, his version of the Crown City roast, stuffing balls, roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables, and of course a few different desserts.

So you can find him making sure the table is decked out in christmas colours and full of food. But as he sets the last appetizer tree down on the table, he nods. "Quite glad to see that you could make it."

Trim a tree A small group of freshly cut green trees are sitting in a corner with room to go around the back. Simple lights are already in place, but there are ornaments with hooks sitting in silent invitation to decorate the tree and gather around as well as different coloured garland too.

But there's plenty of supplies and being able to decorate a tree with Nida last year was all sorts of fun as it will be again this year. So the advisor is definitely happy that nature can come inside at least temporarily.

Ignis stands back and takes a look at the trees with a satisfied sort of nod. "I suppose after the holiday, I will see about replanting it outside." Turning to his guest, there's an easy smile. "It won't do to simply throw it away do you think?"

Gift exchange - Gifts aren't required, but people are free to do so. This can be as private or as public as wished! The royal strategist is busy arranging gifts under the tree, trying to make some sense as to how they should be grouped, so he's on his knees trying to keep the order straight. As soon as someone approaches, he acknowledges their presence with a smile. "Would you mind handing me that blue wrapped gift sitting on the chair right next to you?"

Wild card- Dancing? Snowball fights outside? Feel free to make up a thing here!

Peeking out from behind the large, oddly proportioned snow ball he’d been trying to pack a little more snow on, Mono grinned to see Ignis. “Oh! Hi, Mr. Ignis. I’m making snow people!” He chirped, before moving around the snowball to start on another one. “I saw the other kids making them last year when I got here, but I didn’t like how cold it was then so I never tried.” No shoes in the snow had been very uncomfortable and made winter games seem impractical at the time.

“They’re kinda weird, but it’s more fun than I thought!”

The question gets a thoughtful hum from the child. “I dunno? I never asked if there were rules or anything about how big they should be. I just watched to see how they did it.” His really were a little on the shorter side, though. Closer in height to Mono himself than the larger, more towering ones that other people made. “I kinda like them smaller though.” Big things could be scary, after all. Especially where Mono was from. It was a sign of danger.

“Um… I guess I could use more stuff to give them faces? Snow people need faces just as much as regular people, I think.” Yes, that was a strange observation… But when you came from a place where people’s faces got stolen, it was something that stuck in your head. “I’ve been using stuff that fell off of trees, mostly. I’ve been using my hats too, since I got a few.”

Mono was glad for the assistance, and Ignis’ idea got a little surprised sound. “Berries? I never thought of those!” He hummed a little, going back to packing some snow around the base of the current snowman he was working on.

After a moment or two, he had a thought, and he quickly glanced up at Ignis to voice it. “But not the red ones… Red ones won’t work.” Because, again, the child was not fond of the colour red… And somehow the mental image of stark red on white wasn’t pleasant to him.

No red was a bit of a ‘hard mode’ for berry gathering, especially during the colder seasons… But Mono didn’t really know that, he just knew he didn’t like the colour and he appreciated that Ignis was kind enough to humour him on it without asking for an explanation. Explanations just made adults worry, he found.

“Thanks! I bet you’ll find some really good stuff.” He responded with an excited tone, “Pine cones are good, too. They come in all sizes.” He added with a little tilt of his head, before he watched Ignis while he worked on rolling another snowball. It was somewhat amusing to watch the child prone to slipping and falling as he tried to roll the snow. Sometimes landing on it and sliding over the top or it would roll away from him if he got too close to a hill.

Mono, of course, was happy to trust Ignis with the task… But that didn’t mean the child wouldn’t keep an eye on him, either. After letting a snowball get away from him one too many times, he may have wandered to see if Ignis had made any progress with his collecting duties.

Which meant he saw a pinecone get dropped right on the man’s head, a small gasp and an almost but not quite giggle escaping at the squirrels staring down at the man. “I think they wanna help… Or they want you to go away.” He said as he hurried over, staring up at the squirrels carefully. “You okay, Mr. Ignis?” He asked with at least some concern, being hit in the head with things hurt sometimes. Though acorns were pretty small at least compared to some things.

“Yeah, they sound kind of grumpy.” He responded, glancing up at the squirrel’s agitated chattering sound. “I think sometimes you gotta have a helmet in some places. I used to have a tin can in the last world, gotta protect your head.” He commented as he edged closer, though he seemed to relax a little when Ignis said he was alright. Mono tended to trust Ignis, plus pinecones weren’t particularly large or heavy as far as objects that could be thrown went.

At the instructions, he held out both hands carefully together to make it easier for the man to hand over what he collected. “Wow, that’s great. It’ll make some really good snowmen. Thank you, Mr. Ignis!”

Sure!

Mono nodded again, beaming with his little unpractised, clumsy smile. Something that he was getting a little better after every time, perhaps... "I do! I can probably make more than I have hats for." He was going to try to use all of the things Ignis found, of course. Even if he added them to a few other snowmen already made, perhaps even as pretend buttons down their front like he'd seen some children do.

Then, at some point, he'd seek Ignis out again to show his handiwork rather proudly. All in all, it was a very nice start to his second winter in this world.

FBT!
