Pumpkins

It was getting towards night time but it wasn't dark yet and Yuki was out walking his blue Chocobo Haru. He knew the places to avoid of course as well as the areas that weren't so bad. But he wanted to explore the area and get some fresh very early night air. He heard some bats chirping around too, but they didn't bother him.

A crescent moon was just starting to come into view and a faint view of about eight stars that he could see. Stopping for a moment, Haru started trying to claw at a very small pumpkin. And that's when Yuki looked up and saw a whole field full of pumpkins. His gray eyes grew wide at the sight of all shapes and sizes and was just fascinated.

"Am I imagining all of this?"

The trees in another area were something Yuki typically had nothing to do with. However, curiosity got the better of him tonight and he started heading towards them. Before he concentrated on the fruit though there was a red and white book on the ground so he picked that up first and tucked it in his bookbag before returning his attention to the tree. These fruits weren't anything he was familiar with, so he wandered over closer, keeping an eye on the darkness coming for nightfall. These didn't look like apples, but they were red in colour.

He picked one from "I wonder what you can do with these.."

He is not the only one around looking through things. Lauri had come out on a walk during a rare day off, and here she found the trees and the fruit on it. When she had seen her young friend, she had gone off to see the young man.

Only to find him staring at something vaguely familiar.

"There is a plant on Hala that I hear is similar to this in appearance. It is called a kava and inside the flesh are sweet, fleshy seeds. They taste like berries. They are a popular treat from my understanding."

He looked up at Lauri-Ell when she started talking about fruit from back home. Of course when he'd first arrived he believed nothing about alternate worlds or other gods.

This place had certainly been a real eye opener for him in so many ways.

"Kava.." he repeated softly wondering if that was something he was familiar with although nothing was coming to mind. But then his grey eyes looked back up at the fruit and picked one off of the tree.

"I wonder if they have the same thing inside."

"Shall we see?" Lauri asked, and she pulled a knife from her side. IT was clearly not the greatest quality knife in design, but it was sharp and clean.

One of her first bladed works.

"Here.

Yuki patiently waited and saw the knife that Lauri-Ell was holding. He didn't know quality of knives but he sure knew that it cut the pomegranate open and Yuki peered at the fruit.

"Those must be the seeds then."

Seeds, huh? Lauri reached to poke a seed. What?

"Do you eat them then?"

"Uhm..I've heard people do eat them." Yuki reflected, thinking that he'd heard that back home and read that in the library when researching different fruits and vegetables in this world.

"I shall try one," she resolved, trying to poke a seed free. "Will you join me in this? Or is it unsafe?"

Perhaps she should worry about that.

"The seeds should be safe to eat." Yuki nodded. "but I'll join you." Seeds were the things he heard about the most though he was more than sure the rest of the fruit was safe to eat.

Well then. She reached down to pluck a seed free, marveling at how it reddened her fingers before popping it into her mouth.

"This is a new taste."

"Is it good?" Yuki asked, fascinated. This would be a completely new experience for him and he wondered what other things could be made from this fruit. But it was fun to be trying something new.

Good enough that Lauri-Ell plucked another seed to try it.

"I think I could be encourage to try more of it. But I feel like it would be better in other things"

"I can always go back to the Mage's Tower and get some recipe books." Yuki replied with a nod. It wouldn't hurt him to go back there and it was a pleasant walk which gave him plenty of exercise that he didn't get sitting at a desk.

Yes, she supposes she could. Not that she knew very much about cooking. She had never really done so before.

"I get most of my food from the tavern," she admitted. "But I suppose I could investigate."

"Well it'd be fun to see how they cook it. But if I go and borrow some of the books, then I'll let you tell me if you want to look at them too."

Yuki wasn't adverse to sharing knowledge because that was something he was good at doing. There were some kids in the town who were wearing dirty clothing and he was more than sure that they couldn't read or write which hurt him on some level that he didn't quite understand.

Could it even be cooked? Could you cook seeds? Lauri was so clueless when it came to food that was not already prepared or in a box with heating instructions.

"That sounds agreeable to me. It is nice to read to learn."

Not to learn to cook. That's never going to happen. To her the kitchen is a place for water, the fridge, and the reheating methods. Nothing more.

"I'll go back soon then. It'll be interesting to see how they cook the fruit and if they cook it with the seeds too." It was kind of funny in a sense. Miss Honda had taken books out from the library on topics dear to him and Kyo. Now it seemed it was his turn to take out cookbooks and see how things were done.

"I remain intrigued over the idea that one cooks fruit," Lauri admitted. It was strange to not just treat fruit as something to be eaten out of hand.

"Well that's what I heard they do back home. But I can't say that I actually know anything about it."

He thought a moment. "But either the diner here or the hunting lodge might cook something like this."

"Perhaps the lodge," Lauri agreed. And she said that mostly because she had never been there before. It was too far out of the way when she was very busy through working at the smith.

He nodded. "It'll give me some exercise to go to all of the places and do some more research. But I'll have to check around and find out."

It would get him out from behind his desk and that was something he usually always appreciated.

Lauri offered him a fond smile, reaching out to put her hand on his shoulder.

"Yuki, you are a very good friend to me. Your research is very good too. You help me become wiser and this I very much appreciate it. And you deserve to know it."

He smiled and felt his face turn red. People usually didn't touch him and of course before his curse broke he avoided it. "You're welcome. But I just try to help where I can."

"You help me a lot," Lauri laughs and nods. "For that I'm grateful."

She just needed him to know that.

"You have been very good at guiding me through interaction with humans."

He tried his best to smile. "Humans can be kind of tough to understand at times. But I'm sure with more practice, you won't need me around as much to help navigate."

"But help is nice," Lauri answered, frowning. Was that implying that she should be leaving him alone?
