Pumpkins

It was getting towards night time but it wasn't dark yet and Yuki was out walking his blue Chocobo Haru. He knew the places to avoid of course as well as the areas that weren't so bad. But he wanted to explore the area and get some fresh very early night air. He heard some bats chirping around too, but they didn't bother him.

A crescent moon was just starting to come into view and a faint view of about eight stars that he could see. Stopping for a moment, Haru started trying to claw at a very small pumpkin. And that's when Yuki looked up and saw a whole field full of pumpkins. His gray eyes grew wide at the sight of all shapes and sizes and was just fascinated.

"Am I imagining all of this?"

The trees in another area were something Yuki typically had nothing to do with. However, curiosity got the better of him tonight and he started heading towards them. Before he concentrated on the fruit though there was a red and white book on the ground so he picked that up first and tucked it in his bookbag before returning his attention to the tree. These fruits weren't anything he was familiar with, so he wandered over closer, keeping an eye on the darkness coming for nightfall. These didn't look like apples, but they were red in colour.

He picked one from "I wonder what you can do with these.."

Yeah, it's quite the field. Could seem impossible, right? Tommy thought so, and he was just there, next to Yuki, putting down a large wooden crate that was full of the things. Well, not the large ones, but rather the small ones that were apparently good for cooking.

"Nah, man, growing things happens."

Yeah, Tommy Shepherd, just there to explain things when you need them.

Yuki turned to look at Tommy. And he could only smile at the other's eagerness to gather the smaller pumpkins. "I guess." he said, looking around. He finally picked up one of the ones that were being gathered but it was white in colour.

"I heard these can be used to put tealights in."

It wasn't eagerness, it was work, man. He was being nice to the chef because the dude cooked real good and fed him sometimes.

"Tealights? You mean, like making a jack'o'lantern?"

"Oh those too." Yuki replied. But he picked up a small white pumpkin from the bunchand swirled his finger around the top of it. "I've seen the local people carving these up and making a spot for a little tea light."

"I don't get it. What's the point?"

Because he really thought a jack'o'lantern was what you called it when people did that.

"For decoration too." Yuki replied with a nod. "Not every decoration has to be a jack o'lantern. Those are usually for outside and candles are put in them. But I've heard the people say that they like different pumpkins in the house for other things."

Uh... But yes they do. He looks very confused and disapproving of the fact that it would be something as a decoration but wasn't spooky.

"Weird. I don't get people."

"I guess everyone's different." Yuki replied. He didn't celebrate Halloween but it was known to Japan. Still, he liked the autumn leaves changing and all that, but wasn't a big fan of all the spooky and scary stuff himself.

But then he looked at the basket. "Are you gathering these for the Lodge then? Do you need some help?"

Everyone was of course different, and that was just how life was.

"Yeah, the lodge. I told the chef I'd pick them up for him. Sorta owe him for all the food he lets me have, so I'm taking it at no charge as part of my courier business."

Help was... well, he supposed he could walk with the guy for a bit.

"Mister Scientia." Yuki reasoned aloud. The guy did seem to be nice which was only further enforced by Tommy talking about being fed there. Getting paid and eating didn't seem like a bad deal at all in his book.

But the last part surprised him. "You have a courier business?"

Really? Ignis had a last name? Wow, shocked.

"Yeah, I... Started it with my little brother. I wanted him to not feel like I was doing everything, because he was mature for a kid. And to help Mono. And now I basically run it without Billy."

Because no more Billy.

Yuki half smiled and wasn't sure what to say because he didn't know what he should ask in a polite sort of manner. So he remained silent though he was happy Mono was in on it.

"So you just run things or messages?"

"Mono does messages. I do larger deliveries. I'm thinking about hiring more kids to help with missives. But me, I'm better than chocobos in a lot of cases. I'm fast and relatively strong."

So he does a lot of this work. Now that he has the pumpkins loaded up he puts the crate on his shoulder like it weighs nothing.

"Helps keep me and my boyfriend fed. Helps take care of Mono too."

"Hiring more kids." Yuki mused thoughtfully. "There's some kids that live on the streets. I wonder if they'd be interested in helping." He didn't know how to put it into words how much it bothered him to see them.

He never did see homeless kids where he lived, but then again the Sohmas were pretty well off.

And at the comment about keeping his boyfriend fed and Mono too, made Yuki speak up. "You said you're faster than a chocobo, right?"

"That's sorta the plan. If I can grow our customer base and bring in money, I can give the street kids work and money. I wanna pay them with clothes and money and snacks at the stall we take stuff in at," he said.

The entire point of his work was just feeding people. He didn't need more than hat.

"Way faster than a chocobo. YOu'ove seen me move, man."

"And a place to sleep and clean their clothes." Yuki echoed, thinking of the kids. Some were even younger than his cousins Kisa and Hiro and Momiji. And of course it made him wonder of those kids hadn't been Sohmas and all that, how they would've ended up.

But he wouldn't talk about that.

"I can help out. And you won't have to worry about paying me because I already get paid from working at the agency."

"That much I can't give them probably. They wouldn't trust it. And I don't wanna control them. But I have to try and help. It seems wrong not to?"

Very wrong. And it makes him sick to think people stand by. Back on his world he can't help them so simply. Here? Here he might be able to. And he smiled at the idea that Yuki would help.

"I don't really need more people to run stuff. I can manage most of it. Me and Gar and Mono. For now. I only work evenings here at this point, so I can spend most of the day doing the business work. I'm just, you know, shit at money stuff."

Yuki nodded at Tommy's words about it feeling wrong not to help. It had been a change he'd noticed in himself as he got older and if he really thought about it, in a way it was healing that little boy who got left behind by Ayame while no one helped him.

"So you're looking for someone to help balance the books?" Yuki didn't know much about accounting but he could definitely go to the Wizard's tower and go see for himself how to do it, and then he could teach Tommy because he was good at that.

"I don't even know what I'm looking for," Tommy admitted with a sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Like, back home I only look out for me and I've got plenty of good paying work to help out with that. And in the Sphere there wasn't really money so much as just people helping each other, so I could alwyas have what I needed. Here, though..."

Here he has to support multiple people and he doesn't even know how to make it work and keep himself as fed as he needs.

"I'm just lost."

Yuki smiled. "Well if you figure it out, just let me know." It was hard for him too but he wouldn't ever admit to something like that. He'd found that by helping even someone like Mono or Lauri-Ell, it gave him a great feeling. Kind of like it was great to be needed like had happened with Miss Honda all of those years ago back home helping her reconnecting her to her mom when she'd been lost.

If he figured it out he might. For now he chuckled and shook his head. There was no chance he was going to figure anything out at all. That just wasn't who he was.

"I'm not the thinker of my team. So I imagine you'll be waiting a while."

The grey head shook and Yuki let out a little laugh. Well hopefully whoever was looking out for Tommy did all the thinking and helped him out as much as he could.

"Than I can wait."

And he turned to look around to scout for some more pumpkins.

Really? Tommy laughed.

"You're a good kid, Yuki."

And he liked that. It was nice, running into good people.

He tried to hide the blush on his face. It had been such a long time since anyone had referred to him as a 'good kid' but it was nice to hear all the same.

"Thanks."

Man, give him grief for it. Tell him that you're not a kid. He's going to feel old now.

"Welcome. Super welcome."
