Speaking Crystal

[Mid-morning, a familiar voice rings out over the crystals.]

Good morning, everyone! We trust you've settled in well! We'd like to meet you all formally and invite you to join us in the fountain square this afternoon! We look forward to seeing you there!

Who; The Aspects (Halcyn & Athony) and YOU!
What; The Aspects welcome their new summons to Aterat
Where; The Fountain Square
When; Thursday; Mid-day
Warnings; None I can think of. Will update if necessary

The Fountain square remains unchanged from your arrival, the multiple tiers containing archways all dim save for the one from which Halcyn and her counterpart, Athony, step at the appointed time. Around the fountain, though, have gathered artisans, performers, and salesman as well as recruiters. People are looking for clerks, delivery persons, and people to run small tasks for them. There are leatherworkers interested in hiring intrepid individuals to acquire more exotic skins for their trade and various other ways to earn coin.

And then there is a larger stall built into the back of a large covered wagon pulled by two oxen. It's set off a little ways from the others, either to set itself apart from the vulgus or simply to afford it room. Two people dressed smartly stand a bit apart from it and will encourage any passersby to come speak with the clerk behind the desk. Emblazoned across the side in intricate gold leaf are the letters "MGB" and the callers will inform anyone inquiring they are representatives of the Merchant's Guild Bank, and that they are willing to negotiate investment in any business ventures newcomers may be interested in...for a modest cut, of course. They assure the contract is thoroughly negotiable and urge you to speak with the broker in the carriage.

All business dealings cease when the portal on the highest level of the fountain activates and Halcyn and Athony step through. She is tall, lithe, with flowing red hair and an aura of goodness and life that overrides any attempts to read her mind. He has a darker aura, clad in deep gray armor with a gem-encrusted sword at his hip and a formidable shield strapped to his back. The murk around his mind is just as difficult to pierce, and anyone sensative to the flow of time would sense these two seem to exist as though apart from it.

They descend the dias to stand at ground level, equal to the gathered crowd, but when Halcyn speaks, her soft melodious voice carries as though its amplified, though there seems to be no source of amplification save for a subtle vibration of magic those sensative to it may sense.

"I'm so glad you all came!" She claps her hands together, clasping them before her before spreading her arms wide. "We have so much work to do, as I've told you all already. We have been tasked with the reconstruction of this world, and we simply can't without all of you. The reason why is complicated, but I can assure you we require nothing of any of you that you are not capable of." She motions around at the square and all those gathered here.

"The people of Aterat are eager to welcome you as well, but Athony and myself will remain around should you wish to speak more privatly. Again, thank you all for coming!"

With that, the gathering dispurses into it's former form, though the Aspects remain should anyone wish to speak with them.

Feel free to post top levels to meet and greet your fellow arrivals and to explore the offerings of this strange new city.

Throughout the city, not only today, but at random times, a new rhyme seems to have been picked up by the children at play, skipping rope or playing hopscotch, or dancing in a strange circle. There's a haunting quality to it, but maybe that's only because no one's taken notice of its existence before:

Traveler, traveler, what do you seek?
Riches and fame make oaken souls weap.

Traveler, traveler, watch where you're led.
One turn left, three turns right will take you to bed.

Traveler, traveler, try not to get lost.
The dwellers in the mirk may well be the cost.

Yeah, no, this had been a terrible idea.

Crowds? Unfamiliar setting? The fact she had been brought here at all? It was all culminating in a lack of control that had Esther needing to get away almost as quickly as she'd arrived. She'd seen what she needed to see, and heard what the Aspects had had to say, and none of it made anything any more palatable for her.

Reconstructing worlds and cities was something for graphic novel protagonists and for the movies, not for her. None of this made sense, none of it was right.

With a familiar, hot, sick sensation beginning to prickle in her chest, she was so concerned with getting away from the people gathered and the performers and the noise, that she'd been jostled by one stranger and, as a result, almost collided with another, doing the last thing she'd ever want and drawing attention to herself. His 'Good afternoon?' was ignored in favour of a stammered, hurried apology, before she carried on her attempt to leave.

Something much easier said than done, but she was nothing if not determined. On the brink of panicking and probably looking a state, but determined, certainly.

Caelan hummed a little, stepping back enough to give the woman her space when the apology was stammered his way. Now a lot can be said for how ridiculous, silly and dramatic Caelan can be, but he could tell when someone was in a bad way. He was quite soft-hearted sometimes, and Esther’s tone of voice definitely had a certain degree of stress around the edges.

She was looking pretty determined to flee and power through whatever was stressing her out. “Hey, no need to worry.” He responded, though wasn’t entirely sure if she’d acknowledge it given she was looking like a woman on a mission. That mission being to leave. So he keeps his distance and at least does what any proper gentleman would do. Make sure the path was clear by catching up and walking at enough of a distance to part whatever crowd might move into her path from that side. “You got somewhere to be or are you just done with this whole charade?” He adds, at least giving her an idea that she wasn’t alone.

Caelan's reassurance unfortunately fell of deaf ears, though his continued presence didn't go unnoticed - nor did what he seemed to be doing for her.

She couldn't remember meeting him before today, so why he was apparently trying to make getting away from everyone easier was beyond her, but the last thing she was going to do was complain.

The second time he spoke to her, Esther made herself make the effort to look over at him, and - after a few moments - give him an answer, though forcing herself to slow down and go into 'everything's fine' mode was decidedly more strenuous.

"The uh- the second one. I-I don't know why I came out here, I wasn't-" She caught herself briefly, if only because she realised how much of an idiot the next sentence would make her seem like. "... I wasn't expecting the crowd."

Of course there would have been, though that wasn't the only cause of how she was feeling now. But that, however, was not a conversation for right this second, or ever if she could help it.

Caelan might have stepped up the glamour a bit, if only to make himself stand out a little more. Just a touch to make him a little more noteworthy to the crowd, make sure they saw him and moved out of the way of him and his companion. It was a possibly a little strange, most notably his jewelry glinted a little more. It might have been a little absurd though, this short fellow being a stubborn little crowd parter for his rather tall companion.

The selkie is silent until Esther eventually responded a few moments later, his expression particularly patient considering his usual demeanour. He could mock her on the matter of not expecting the crowd, but that was cruel and unnecessary at the moment. There wouldn’t be any comedic value in it, and she hadn’t upset him in any way to deserve it.

“No, I would say more turned out to this silly thing than could be expected. Seems like a lot more people were pulled into this world than I thought.” It’s not entirely a lie, it made sense considering what the aspects wanted but... Well the scale was certainly more obvious when everyone was gathered together like this. “Not that it was worth it.”

She wasn't sure if it was what he was saying or just the fact someone was even vaguely agreeing with her, but on some level Caelan talking was helping.

How deep that level was hidden under layers of anxiety and mild panic, she couldn't say, but she'd be sure to thank him when she was done feeling like she wanted to puke. As a result, she couldn't manage much of a response or reply. All she could do was make a note to thank him the next time she saw him.

After what felt like an hour, the crowd grew thinner, before they eventually came out the other side and Esther had space around her. That alone was somewhat comforting, but she didn't stop for long. Her heart still felt as though it was beating far too quickly; she felt hot, and her breath couldn't quite catch itself. Not keen on having what she knew would be an intense (if lowkey) meltdown in front of this stranger, she tried to figure out how best to get him to leave, before that plan was thrown directly into the wind by the undeniable need to just stop.

Ducking around a corner that lead onto a (thankfully) deserted street, Esther rather gracelessly sank down onto the floor, and rested her head back against the brickwork as her eyes closed, and she tried to focus on.

Well. Not doing this.

There really were a damned lot of people here, and you were only more aware of it when you wanted to be anywhere but in a crowd. Glancing at Esther’s face once in a while as they moved, he found himself a little concerned that they might not get clear of the gathering before she had a meltdown of some kind.

As it was, even if she had the ability to think clearly and discourage him from lingering, she was stuck with him. Caelan didn’t tend to leave people who were clearly in a bad way on their own, not unless they deserved it. He didn’t know Esther, but he had a pretty good feeling that she did not.

Softy, gonna get you in more trouble than you can get out of one of these days...

So, she was stuck with him until he decided she was good.

Rounding the corner behind her, he stood by the edge of the building she leaned against and kept an eye out for break aways from the crowds that might wander over. Didn’t need any more company than they had. A moment later, once he was satisfied no one was going to try to join them, he glanced down at the stranger to see how she was faring. Hopefully she just needed a minute or two of silence and uncrowded air to recover, but he’d seen worse panic attacks from humans for less reason before.
