Ignis had a heck of a time trying to convince his husband to do something for his birthday. And of course he got met with resistance. Not wanting to cause an issue he let it slide but it still irked him. So the two compromised and decided to do a joint birthday party on Ignis' day who didn't mind sharing. And actually he was looking forward to sharing the day with his husband. So they planned a night for just the two of them, dinner and of course their cats.

The cats were off sleeping wherever so it gave the two men extra time together which pleased the advisor turned professional chef. He'd arranged the time off at the Lodge and left it in completely capable hands so he had the entire day before and day of his birthday off. The other chef even agreed to let Ignis have the third day off but Ignis was more than likely going to make an appearance because he was the owner of the establishment even if he wasn't going to be actually cooking anything.

Orders would need to be placed, ingredients replenished, and there were a million other things to do. So he kept that under his hat and bought plenty of food to cook.

Gifts for his husband lay sitting out on the table, crisply wrapped as they were in green paper. Dinner was going to be prepared, but for the moment he was sitting completely dressed fresh from a warm shower, but was standing in front of the mirror, trying to figure out how to style his hair. Should he leave it down?

And when he heard Nida, Ignis called out to him. "I'll be there in a few moments to start dinner darling."

His birthday was a work day, and he didn't know how ot get that through Ignis's head. It was hard for Nida, but he tried to explain it, and when it was accepted, well, he accepted it. Especially when it was suggested that they could instead enjoy Ignis's brithday. That... That had been embraced with a lot of joy from Nida.

In fact, he'd gone out of the way to prepare for this. A new gift for his beloved, finding a confectioner in the city to create a cake for them both, and of course, the hard work of getting some time off. Three days. A time to be with his husband in the most decadent ways he could imagine. And he could imagine.

For now, though, he heard his lover call and Nida moved from the kitchen where he'd started some of the dinner prep in the form of the vegetable chopping he'd been asked for. He had come upstairs, still in his work uniform since he'd finally gotten back in from his last shift before their time together, and he smiled at Ignis. He looked so good.

"Hey love. You're looking good. I've already started chopping, but since you called, I came to your summons."

He was still fussing with his hair. It had gone up in the usual work professional style that he wore at work. But he wasn't at work and wasn't going to be there for at least the next day or so. With a sigh, he started putting it down in what he called the 'unkempt crownsguard' look with it being all over the place.

And just as he was about to give up on it, Nida appeared, looking dashing as always in his work uniform. If dinner hadn't already been started, Nida would have become dinner right then and there. So Ignis just smiled at his husband.

"Thank you darling."

So it was back to the mirror and the advisor shook his head, while looking at his man's reflection. "Should I wear it up or down?"

With the question asked Nida moves closer, his fingers coming up to tease Ignis's hair.

"Well, down. For a few reasons. But the important one in the moment is that i find it easier to grab and pull at it when you don't have product in."

Which made him a touch of a hypocrite because his was up with that same product in this moment.

Ignis took a few quick hitched breaths as his husband teased at his hair. But he kept his gaze firmly in the mirror as he smiled at the answer he got. Mental notes were then swiftly made so that his hair was never up around Nida anymore.

Only up at work, got it.

"I'm somewhat surprised we've never spoken of this topic before."

See, that was a good sound, one that had Nida moving to wrap his arms around Ignis just to enjoy the warmth of him and imagine what they could be doing. But yeah, dinner first.

"I'm not. You love looking how you love looking. I wouldn't want to change that about you. Freedom of expression and all of that. Guess I'm jealous of that a little, given when I was growing up that wasn't really a thing I had much of."

When Nida put his arms around him, Ignis was quick to lightly hold the man in place so that he couldn't get away easily. But he continued gazing at his husband in the mirror as he spoke.

Turning a little, he looked directly into Nida's eyes. "Well no one is telling you how to wear your hair now." And then he wondered aloud. "I don't believe more hair would look badly on you."

He just might have to tie it back with the guard and all.

Get away easily? Oh maybe he could, maybe he couldn't. But did it matter when there was nowhere else he would rather be? Nowhere.

Still, he was left staring at Ignis in shock. No one was... No one was telling him how to wear his hair now. He looks past Ignis into the mirror, and finds his own shocked gaze.

"The memories you saw of me, they don't really do justice to how I kept it as a SeeD. This style, it's more of a remnant of my days in Galbadia with him. It was a popular party-guy style, and it was my cover. In the last two worlds, though, there was rarely the product to keep it up. Raimon and others had been getting me back used to my hair doing what I'd left it this long for. But I never... I never considered changing it."

Ignis raised his eyebrows a little and wondered at his husband. "Well I mean, you've no need to, as you said it's up to you and all that. However, it truly is your choice if you'd like to change it."

Sure it might take him a little bit to get used to, but Noct and Gladio especially had long hair and it was simply a matter of personal preference and style as to how they wore their hair. And if Nida wanted longer hair or to style it a different way? Well Ignis was all for it.

And somewhere deep inside Ignis wished he could see his husband as a SeeD with all of his classmates.

This was an interesting idea. His fingers came up from around Ignis's waist to tease at his own hair.

"Would you like it though? Longer?"

"I think it would look rather dashing." Ignis smiled at his husband. But then again it was his husband's decision at the end of the day. And he would encourage or support whatever the man wanted to do or not do with his hair.

Dashing, huh? Nida smiles. "Okay, I'll try it. But of course it won't happen overnight. And we had plans for today. Come on, let's make dinner."

"Hair does take some time to grow." Ignis replied with a nod. So finally he 'decided' to keep his hair down and set the brush to the side of the dresser and got up with a smile on his face. "Yes, I must ensure that my husband eats."

It did, and Nida felt repeating that observation was probably silly. So he chose to smile instead and took his beloved's hand.

"It's your birthday. I think it's my job to make sure MY husband eats."

He got up almost obediently and started walking with Nida. "Yes, but we decided that I was rather sharing my day with you, remember? So how about we both make sure the other eats this evening?"

"Well, I suppose that works," Nida smiles, catching Ignis's hand in his own. "I only started the chopping. I admit, you're still better at it than I am.

"It's simply a matter of practice." Ignis smiled, kissing the side of his husband's head as they made their way to the kitchen.

And once he got there, he started making drinks for them so that they would have those handy during their dinner prep work. "Shall I make you some tea before we get started darling?"

From experience he knew that if he got too involved in something he wouldn't stop to do anything else.

Ooooh, drinks. Nida is always happy for god drinks.

"Please do. Something light and fruity I think. So, tell me. I know you're planning something. What's the plot, beloved."

"Light and fruity coming right up." Ignis replied, reaching up into the cabinets to get that done for his husband. As he set things down on the counter and he looked back over his shoulder. "I'm working on cooking dinner for this birthday thing, as I wasn't able to do so when it was your actual birthday."

"Lovely. You always have such good things for this," Nida said as he kept working. "Except, you know, it's YOUR birthday. I should take care of you, beloved."

"You wouldn't allow a birthday, and I've never shared mine. So it is a treat for me to do this." Ignis smiled. He really didn't mind this whole thing, and he was so used to doing the caretaking that it would be hard for him to sit and do nothing.

Maybe the lads back home could do it easily enough, but he couldn't.

"Well, then this will just have to work for us, and we could take turns on whose year it is to be in charge of celebrating," Nida suggested.

Wouldn't that be its own delight?

That comment got Ignis to smile. "Then by all means, next year it's decidedly your turn to plot all of this out."

He had readied the table, and set to putting the flowers in a vase along with water and food for them. And that too was going on the table, right in the center.

Oh come on. Nida snickered at that statement.

"Fine, you win. EVen though it's actually your birthday."

Ignis smiled. "I had every intention of winning at least this little skirmish of ours." Normally he really didn't mind who 'won'.

"Ah, a battle, I fear that since I can so easily take you in a fight, I should let you win."

That wasn't true at all. Ignis was very talented, and while Nida had more experience, he knew Ignis would easily outclass him with time. Except that NIda was very happy to fight dirty.
